As an avid Audiophile. I am considering running a 5.1 set up with all tube amps. Anyone here running a ht system with Tube audio? What are you using and what are the pros and cons?

Tube amplifiers would not work well for home theater. The Pro would be the same as it has always been with tubes, they produce warm sound and can handle over their respective ratings for longer periods of time than transistors, meaning they can be over-driven for longer periods of time before becoming damaged.

Dissadvantages would be distortion, and lack of bass control and slam. You would be much better off looking into a multichannel power amp like Sunfire if you like "tube sound" or just getting a large transistor multichannel amplifier. There is a reason you don't see multichannel tube amplifiers.:D

Uh, I dont buy that one bit.

In fact i avoid using my tube amp on tv or movies because it sounds so damn good I would never turn it off.

I think in a small room you could have a rocking system.

I was thinking of doing 3 SP3s in 6ch using probably jordan drivers now.

It can be done & alot of people do run tube amps as their primary amplification in their home theaters.

I think if it were me for the sake of simplicity, costs of retubing & the hassel of biasing a bunch of different amps i'd look into hybrid tube amps instead of full blown tube gear.

Butler Audio makes a very nice hybrid HT amp,i have 2 butler tube amps for car audio, even though i replaced them with other amps they are nice sounding & well built amps.

Maybe for a small room, and x-overed high enough to limit bass sent to the speakers and directed to a subwoofer, other than that I say forget it.

I stand corrected about tube amplifiers designed for home theater, I should get out more I guess.:)

I currently have a very nice solid state HT set up. I was thinking of doing this as a second audio setup in my room. I currently run a Classe SSP600 pre/pro with a classe CA5200 5ch and and a CA2100 for Back surrounds. For speakers I have B&W 802D (FR &FL) HTM4S (C) & 4 DS8S's (RS, LS, RB,&LB) & 2 Velodyne DD12's for ultra low's. Don't get me wrong this system is very nice and I am by no means dissapointed with it.

But Being a bit of a HiFi junkie I have accumluated a some nice speakers that I will never get get back what I paid or feel they are worth to me. I used these in various tube systems and love them all for different reasons. Here is some of what I have laying around speaker wise. A pair of Verity Audio Sarastro's, a pair of Magico Mini 2's, I also have severla models of older B&W's and quite a few pairs of various one of a kind custom speakers. To put it blankly I have spent a lot of time and money creating what I believe is great sound. In the process I have accumulated a lot of speakers. If I added up the dollars that sit silent in a spare room of my house I would have to say that I am wasting well over $300,000.00 I was simply looking to use some of what I have collected over the last couple of years.

I was mearly looking for some thoughts that any of you may have to offer. I have went to great legenths to achieve what I believe is the perfect sound. (I have found it does not exist) But I so love the richness of tubes. I just want to play with setting something up. I'd love to hear some suggestions for both speakers you guys would reccomend as well as what amps you feel would be well suited for a HT setup. I am not looking for much....................... Only perfect. Now that shouldn't be too hard now should it?

I see you respond to so many posts Seth, I always wonder how you manage the time to do it. One thought is you probably type much faster than I do.
