My father was talking to me yesterday and said that he wanted to get a 5.1 theater system. Thinking it would not be too difficult, I told him to go on with what he wanted in it. He wants it to play DVDs, and have high definition, but not be more than $300. A Blu-Ray player is not necessary. Can anyone give any suggestions?

High definition what?

Upscaled DVDs are not High Def, so if he wants high def he needs a BR player.

Do you need speakers, a receiver, as well as a disc player?

For $300…isn’t going to happen, sorry. If he just needs a player that's a different story.

Exactly what hardware do you hope to get for that $300? Don't get your hopes up too high.

IOW, what does he have now that he wants to build on?

If he has a DVD player and a HD tv et and has access to HD programming already you might find a HTIB in your price range.

$300 probably isn't going to get you far; definitely not if he wants high def video and audio.
