5.1 surrounds

Good day to all. which would be better at l/r surrounds: bose 301's; jbl n28ll or svs sb-01?
I have a denon avr3806 receiver. 2 jbl stadiums, bose vc10 center and bose 301's(n28ll in storage) for my rears. I actually have an mtx sw2 subwoofer that claims 100 watts rms but it is really inadequate.
I am in the process of ordering the pb10 sub from svs and wondered if i should order the sb-01's.

Well buying new stuff can hardly compete with free stuff you already own if you're on a budget.

I'd use the 301s as surrounds, and then go out a demo'ing later when you have the money to shop for some new loudspeakers (that new subwoofer should tide you over for a few months).

Seems to me u are saying that i should get rid of my other speakers and do a complete upgrade..... if i can afford it. Can't my jbl stadiums suffice and work on surrounds? i have always loved jbl.

I'd be more concerned about your center speaker. That's the weakest link in your system.

Putting together a really good system over a period of time as you can afford each new piece is the way to go. Audition as many speakers as your are able in your price range. This is a must IMO. The PB10 has a very good rep, I don't know much about the whole SVS system other than it's a solid system by all accounts. Below is the order I would go with. Use the best of your existing speakers as surrounds:

1. Audition locally as many speakers as you can. Take your time. Many people enjoy this part of the process quite a bit.

2. The two front main speakers are the heart of your system. Don't cheap out here.

3. Subwoofer

4. Center, the one designed to match your mains. You might consider not using a center at all until you can afford the right one. Try it and see when you get your mains.

5. Surrounds. Use the best you have right now until you can afford new ones.

use your JBL stadium for the fronts

buy the best sub you can afford - lest you regret it later on.

start auditioning for a good center, if you are going to stick with the JBL stadiums, look for a center that matches them (from the same series)

I'm not familiar with your JBL rears ... can you post a link?

your receiver outclasses your speakers, the majority of the budget should have been spent on the speakers instead of the receiver, but hey, if it's there already ... that's a real good receiver.

I actually had the speakers before so the receiver was the last thing i bought. Before that i had a pioneer vsx-515 which was a weak receiver (to me). I love the stadiums and wanted to keep them at least thats why i am upgrading the others first starting with the sub. i was also trying to work on the surrounds but i guess, as u rightly said, my center channel is very weak so i'll spend on that before.
i am sold out to svs so i am leaning to acquiring the complete system..... eventually.

I've had the n28lls for about 3 years but they were in my little store room.

By the way are the 301s that bad? or is it my receiver thats too good for them?

I didn't bother checking the specs on the Bose speakers, but your main goal is matching your speakers ... I'm thinking JBL fronts should be matched with JBL centers and surrounds (your surrounds are pretty good actually)

IMO, I don't think you need the SVS speakers ... just the sub, most of the HT wow factor comes from the sub - next are the surrounds.

in short, all you need for your setup is a good sub and a good center (this is where most of the movie dialogue comes out)

which SVS sub are you looking at? still the PB10? how big is your room? is it sealed to other areas?

I am still thinking of the pb10. my room is 11'*14'*9' but it enters into the kitchen area about 11'*7' separated by a half wall. the pb10 fits nice into my budget and will allow me to get the center.
I am glad i wont have to change my surrounds. I know also that they are inferior to my receivers ability but so far i get very good sound from them..at least for my room size. One day i will one some real master blasters.

I meant the n28's. sorry, I knew I wasn't clear when I was typing that.

the PB10 is a great sub ... but you should confirm with SVS if it's good enough for your room size of around 2000 cubes. (kitchen plus room)

i did contact svs already and they agreed with the pb10 or 12. i think the deciding factor is the fact that i will (even with the reductions) be able to purchase a better center channel or surrounds.
I will still need to upgrade my speakers to more or less compliment the ability of the receiver so i willl still need ur advice on a decent sysytem.
I am always being encouraged reading or posting on this site to get the best i can afford so i will be hunting in a few months. As i mentioned before i already had these jbl's.
I dont want just a good system i want a great system but without the overkill. I will be in my small space for quite a while.
