5.1 surround and gaming

Im pretty new to home theatre,I have my X-Box 360 hooked to my system with and optical cable,for the optimal surround effect.My problem is,when im playing a game, im not hearing the rear speakers,or as the picture turn the audio fades out. Its getting frustrating as I like things to sound right and its not.Watching movies its fine but playing games the sound just dies out.

It may (I repeat *may*) be how the audio in those games is, movies rarely have tons of activity from the surrounds at every moment in the film, the games you play may be similar.

I don't think that's it. The latest video games generally REALLY try to make it seem like you're in the game. Sometimes they even over-use the surrounds. I think he probably just has a setting wrong on his receiver, like having his Xbox set to stereo instead of 5.1.

Are you hearing anything form your surround L/R and center channel, or is it just the rear surrounds that don't work when gaming?

thank u all for replying..........My xbox is configured to dolby digital 5.1..Im using a pioneer amp 7.1 (vsx 815) I was told its a entry level amp.Im getting sound from the surrounds but its not as clear as I would like it(i.e voices behind you and background noises(explosions) thanks again for helping me

Maybe you just need to adjust the levels of the rear speakers, sometimes the auto-setups don't do the best job, especially on budget recievers.
