5.1 speaker system... $300 CDN to spend

I have a few options. The reciever is a Yamaha HTR-5840 and there is about $300 left to spend on 5 or 5.1 speakers.

My buddy works for best buy and can 'uh-hum', help with the price...so here is what I have found and I would love some input or suggestions.

Remember, I'm in Canada...brokerage fees and shipping cost money, which means I have less to spend on the speakers. So I don't think a system from the states will do.

So, is the polk system worth it? Are there some other systems? Any ideas?

No, this is for a friend. The next addition to the klipsch system will be an upgrade from RF-15's to RF-35's and a set of RS-35 rear dipoles. Then the seperate amp and pre/pro...upgraditis!

That Polk setup isn't terrible, especially given the price. Futureshop does have the Athena .5 System on sale but it is $449. If you can talk your buddy into this one it is the superior bargin IMO. The sub isn't the greatest but it will keep up with that Polk, and the .5 speakers are really very decent.

Athena Micra System

Do they still have the Athena Micra 6 system at your friends store. It is a good entry level system but probably a step below the Athena .5 system.
