Hello,

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if I could get some suggestions to my new homes 5.1 set up. CurrentlyI have:

-TV- Samsung Q80T
-Center Channel- Definitive Technology Mythos 7
-Subwoofer- Velodyne DLS-3750RF
-In Ceiling front/rear- Definitive Technology UIW RCS II

Looking for a suggestion for the AVR? Would like something w 4k 120hz also.

Forgot to add room size, its large with very high ceilings 24' to be exact.... open concept floorpan. 32'x18'

ideas???

Thanks
Steve:)

whats your opinion on yamaha??
Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha are all quality receivers. I like the Audyssey room correction feature on the Denon and Marantz. I also like Denon and Marantz amp section

But I don't know if it would benefit you in that room

I recommend you call these guys and give your room dimensions and volume including open areas to other rooms and see what they recommend. They will not over sell you but will advise you.

That’s a lot of room to pressurize you need big subs buddy what you have really not close for the job .

You have no avr now at all? The speaker placement being in ceiling for L/R mains is horrible, tho maybe good enough for your purposes. Denon/Marantz, Yamaha, Sony & Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer are the general go to mainstream brands for avrs; the Denon 960 would work well enough in 5.1 (and you can easily split a sub pre-out signal to multiple subs with splitters....all that Denon 960 has is an internal splitter for identical output on each pre-out; you'd have to go to Denon models 3xxx and above to get two separately adjustable sub pre-outs for level and delay). With all the changes going on with Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer might leave them out of it for a while.

Everyone is commenting on the sub, but nobody thinks that the in ceiling speakers that are going to be 20 feet away are an issue?

Indeed, with those in ceiling L/R speakers particularly what does it really matter about that sub? Not that it's one of Velodyne's better efforts, tho.

not good news.... adding subs and a new amp no problem, the in ceiling speakers are in and not easy to change out being 24' up

Based on the receiver you asked about you have a budget. That receiver will be fine, check online and see if you can find matching def tech L/R speakers, looks like there in the $200 range (you could get four so you have five matching L/C/R and surrounds). You’ve already got your in ceiling speakers so you’re on your way to a 5.1.4 system. Also to save money a second Velodyne sub and flank your couch with them, it won’t pressurize your room but sitting between them won’t suck.

Have fun and don’t get overwhelmed.

That's the problem though, you've got little in ceiling speakers 24 feet away from you. If you're not going to ask for much from your system in terms of dynamics you may be ok. DT lists a sensitivity of 92 dB @ 1w/1m. If that's to be believed (and it's questionable from deftech), you could reach a max of 98 dB 20 feet away with a 90 watt amp. The question is can they handle that much power for any extended period of time?
