5.1 or 7.1 & speaker placement in this room (pics) - plus amusing WAF issues.

I would really appreciate some help / advice on speaker placement and whether to go 7.1 or 5.1

The backstory.

Like most folks, WAF is an issue. For the last few years she compromised by letting me have wires all over the floor, and I compromised by using an AVR I hated but she thought looked good. We recently wised up and realized nobody was happy. So, I bought a new AVR (Yamaha HTR-6063) and promised to do away with as much visible cabling as possible.

And that’s when the trouble began!

The situation:

The system is:

TV: Toshiba 47VZ650U Regza 47" LCD HDTV
AVR: Yamaha HTR-6063 (RXV567)
BRP: Sony BDPS570
Front speakers: Paradigm Cinema 70 v2.0
Centre channel: Paradigm Cinema CC v2.0
Sub: Paradigm PDR8 v.3

The old AVR was 5.1 and the surrounds were also Paradigm Cinema 70 v2.0’s, mounted on stands like the front, at the ends of the couch. It looked and sounded terrible, nobody liked it, not even me.

I have ditched the surround stands, and will mount the surrounds on the walls, running the cables through the walls. Originally I was planning on using Dolby recommendations, and planned mounting the surrounds 5-6” above seated ear level, using Monoprice wall brackets.

Problem – this put them in prime danger of being knocked off the walls by kids / dogs / me carrying something heavy.

So I jumped the gun and ordered some in-wall speakers – a pair of Speakercraft MT-TWO’s.

These were planned to be installed at locations “A” in the pictures.

BUT – I soon realized that on the right, this would mean mounting it in an exterior wall, with the attendant insulation, drafts, vapour barrier concerns that would bring.

Soooo – plan B is to go back to using the Paradigm Cinema 70’s for surrounds, and mount them using the monoprice brackets, but higher up, out of harms way, more like THX-type recommendations. This is shown by the B’s in the pics, as you can see from the pic of the left side – it’s a bit of all-or-nothing on the height, as the light switches, thermostat, etc. prevent an intermediate height option.

The question:

If this plan B isn’t soundly rejected by the experts (you lot!) – the question then becomes:
Would it be worthwhile installing the Speakercraft in-wall speakers as rears in a 7.1 setup? As you can see, I don’t have ideal space for this either, the most likely being up in the wall behind the couch, in the positions marked “C” in the pics. Would this be worthwhile or could it make the system sound worse than just sticking with 5.1?

The dimensions:

Assumed “sweet spot” = centre of couch.

Seated ear height – 38”

Viewing distance = 9’

LS (A or B) to ear – 11’6” – lateral distance
RS (A or B) to ear – 6’ 6” – lateral distance

L&R mains – 11’ from ear / 38” high / 22.5” from edge of TV
Centre – 10’ from ear / 53” high / centred over TV (ignore the fact that it is shown below the TV, I am making a custom bracket to mount it above the TV and point it down a few degrees).

REAR WALL 3’ BEHIND LISTENING EAR.

Position A approx 43” from floor or 5” above ear.

Position B approx 73” from floor or 35” above ear.

Position “C” approx 7’4” from floor or 50” above ear.

PLEASE IGNORE THE KITCHEN TABLE, FRIDGE, AND STOVE – THEY ARE TEMPORARILY DISPLACED FOR KITCHEN RENOS (How did you think I got the new AVR and the spanking new SONY BDP!!!)

Notes / constraints:
1)There is no more budget – this is strictly work with what I have.
2)The room is doubtless atrocious acoustically – what with all the tile floor. It is also mostly full of noisy kids, boisterous dogs, and other things that bring joy to my life, so it is very much a “multi-use” and “compromise” situation.
3) I would like to achieve a setup where, as much as possible, I can finish it, pop in “Master and Commander”, “Hulk”, or “Kung-Fu Panda” and finally demonstrate “what’s the big deal with all this surround stuff anyway?”

I'd try to help but the pics aren't showing up. I will say that the 6' height is preferred. If the Yammy has YPAO auto setup, you should use it. It'll help balance the speakers' output.

The Dolby recommendations are just that - recommendations. Do what works for you. If you go with them higher up, just make sure you can aim the speakers with the brackets. I prefer to have them closer to ear level, however that isn't very attractive or functional when mounting on the wall.

I wouldn't mind the rear speakers, but I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle, TBH. If there is no budget left, what you might consider is selling the inwall speakers as well as your Paradigms for an upgrade of the front three (or even just stereo) one day. A thought.

For now, tilt your center speaker upward, until it is ideally firing directly onaxis to your ears.

Ok, I would mount the surrounds in the "C" area (5.1), angled down some if possible, and about 9' apart. Also looks like the fronts are toed in a little too much.

For the Cinema 70s, the Bass cross over should be 120-160Hz.

Yes, it has the YPAO and I'll be using it with a tripod when I get the speakers mounted and wored.

Yea, it sucks when we have to compromise, but without a dedicated room that's usually the name of the game. Oh well.

To be clear, you mean do not mount any speakers at A or B, and mount the two additional CC 70's at "C" (i.e. stay 5.1 only, have the "surrounds" in the back, and do not use the in-wall speakers)?

Yea, the fronts are still geting knocked about during the chaos of the renos - shoud settle down and allow me to index them soon!

Thanks for the help and opinions so far guys.

1. whats up with the microwave in the living room?
2. whats up with the stove in a doorway?
3. whats up with the refrigerator in a doorway?

They're renovating the kitchen as stated in his original post :)

Though the microwave by the couch is handy for a never ending supply of popcorn during movie nights!

(B) would be my pick for the surrounds & (C) ok for the 7.1 option, My Side surrounds are in a similar location, (maybe back a touch) and I use some speakercraft in ceiling speakers for my 7.1 (AIM8-3) which work great (better than I thought) & dont interfer with the decor

I'll be setting up my system soon in the new place and in a similar bind. I think i'm going to keep it has a 5.2 system and not deal with the added two speakers. I think my system is able to handle my amount of space and it seems like thats the consensus in the 5.1 vs 7.2 debate?

Im also having placement issues: I can either put it up against a beam similar in fashion to "C" and angle downwards, or put them on stands behind the sectional. In the end, i'm going to compromise sounds quality because I imagine compromised sound will be better than no sound at all once someone knocks into the stand and the speaker falls onto the floor. I have a 2 year old nephew who's pretty rambunctious right now, don't want to see him get hurt either.

Will report once the speakers are on place... please let us know what placement and number of speakers you ended up with and what you think. If the sound is terrible with placement "C" I might just have to bite the bullet and get some ugly hardcore bb/sand filled stands. Anyone have any recommendations for 30" inch high heavy duty/sand filled stands for 20lb surround speakers?

Thanks!

You can see how I set it up okin this image:
Thanks for that photo, awesome set up =) May I ask, what mounts are you using for those rear surrounds that are hung form the ceiling? If I was setting up a 5.2 system in a similar setting, would you recommend side surrounds or rear surrounds? Thanks in advance :)

Hi, The brackets for the side speakers I made myself out of some steel RHS & a little flat steel & then screwed them to the back of the speakers & the ceiling. (can do a rough diagram if your interested) The far one is beside a fixed part of a sliding door & the near one is just off to the side of a walkway so I get away with them hanging down. for the rears they would have looked silly so I opted for the in ceiling.
Definately go with side surrounds for 5.1 if you can & have them just back a little from where your head is normally when watching movies. The height needs to be above your ear position . you can see mine are quite high above, maybe 3ft & they give great surround effects.
