5.1 Optical Cable Subwoofer<->PC Questions

Hi, I'm new here and the reason I joined is because of this little issue I have. I dont know if I am posting in the right forum section, I hope I do. So here is my problem:

I have this old DKdigital 5.1 sound system and a maybe 3 year old PC.
Now I connect the Subwoofer with my PC via Optical Cable. The problem here is that I dont really have 5.1 support.

I have a program from C-Media installed with which you can change the volume of every single loudspeaker, change their position virtually and such things. I could change the volume and such of every speaker and test them correctly a while ago with this program. Like when I click on Side Left speaker I only hear the voice say "Left Surround" on the left speaker and not on any others. So that is how it should be. However now since My Subwoofer only has 1 optical slot and I use Optical with my XBOX360 too, I removed the Optical cable from the PC. And now I have put in the optical cable of my PC again.

And here is the real problem:
I dont have full 5.1 support anymore :-/
When I test the speakers it only works correctly for the left front and right front speakers. When I click on any other speaker icons I dont hear anything.
also if I click on Central speaker there is nothing. Now if I switch on this button: "7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter", then it works for central speaker too = when I click on central speaker icon I hear "Center" only from center speaker. However right side, left side and subwoofer cant be tested properly. And also weird thing: When I control the volume, if I put down the center volume, it doesnt change anything. Center speaker gets quiter if I put down left and right front speakers... weird...

When I listen to music (mp3), all sound speakers work. However dont sound as good as they sounded before, when I had control of them all in the program. For example the Subwoofer is too quite and all the speakers seem like they emulate stereo sound instead of dolby prologic 2.

So to sum it up all loudspeakers seem like to think that they are part of a dual-loudspeaker system instead of a 5.1 system.

I tried the whole thing (testing single speakers and changing their volume) via Coaxial cable so the Optical cable is not the problem.
I also checked in Sound And Audio Device Properties that the right Sound Playback device is chosen and that 5.1 surround sound speakers is set.
I also reinstalled the High Definition Sound driver a few times and that didnt help.
I also tried testing via subwoofer and it worked perfectly, all speakers respond correctly, so thats not the problem either.

Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong? If you need more info before you can help me say so, however I cant find out what the name of my sound device is, because I dont know how. (Looked in System->Hardware and couldnt find any name) If anyone has the slightest idea of what I could do please tell, every help is appreciated.

The only things I did between the time when I had full 5.1 support on my PC and now is installig GFX drivers, no hardware changing.

sry for double post but I am not able to edit my posts... Here is some more info. My Audio Codec is called CMI 9880L if it helps to anyone :-/
I tried to install a newer audio driver from the internet. With the newer driver I could choose between Digital Audio 48 KHz and 96 KHz and it also says
2CH----->48 (96)KHz. Shouldnt it be 6CH? Or is this another thing?
However the newer driver version doesnt recognize center speaker anymore, only weird sounds come out of it. So I installed my older driver from the CD which worked fine a few weeks/maybe 2 months ago.

Now Ive done a test:
I started a mp3 file on my PC and on my DVD player at the came time (same song). Then I switched around on my subwoofer (which has an integrated decoder) between PC and DVD player and noticed that the sound quality is totally different. From my dvd player I get very nice sound quality from all speakers and good Bass from the subwoofer. Then when I switch to PC... nearly no bass... The speakers emulate the bass and the subwoofer is totally quite... It sounds like Mono compared to the sound that comes thru DVD player<-> subwoofer. Now dont think my PC is bad or sound card is bad or something. When I connect my stereo soundspeakers to the PC the quality is great. Also on PC and DVD players no equalizers were on so thats not the case too. The problem seems like more of a software problem. The PC sends stereo sound through the optical cable instead of 5.1 . And it does recognize that the system is a 5.1 system because it automatically changes to that no matter what sound system I choose. So has anyone had a similar problem like this? Ive tried everything... putting out optical, putting it in and such but nothing helped...
