You may be thinking of SACD and/or DVD-A. SACD can only be passed via HDMI v1.2 or higher or by multichannel analog. You will need a universal player that specifically lists SACD as a format that the player can handle. I use an older Cambridge Audio DV89 for SACD using the five channel analog. Oppo also makes highly recommended players.
I haven't played around with DVD-A yet so I can't answer the technical requirements of that format.
