I just added two more speakers to my yamaha tuner making it 7.1. I plugged in star wars episode 3 and ran the THX optimizer. When it came to the rear surrounds a note came up on the TV by the speaker picture and said both surrounds work together as sixth channel and the test noise came from the regular surrounds and not the rear surrounds. Is 5.1 EX realy 6.1 or did I just spend time putting speakers in for no good reason? The tuner works fine, I ran the mic test and it sent all 7.1 channels setup noise.

Go into your receiver setup and make sure you have activated the rear surround channels. Sounds like the rear surrounds are set to "no"(off) instead of "yes"(on).

That would be the most obvious one.

EX is 5.1 with a matrixed rear center, so you may not hear anything from the rear centers until you are actually playing the movie.

Go get yourself something that is DTS-ES discrete, like Gladiator (not the Extended Edition) and try that out.

7.1= 6.1 regardless of marketing or advertising. DD 5.1EX is Matrixed not discrete. DTS ES can be ES 5.1 Matrix or in most cases ES 6.1 Discrete.

The reason companies adopted using 7.1 or two rear surround backs is so the image is broader then a single speaker and because most speaker companies don't sell individual bookshelf/rear speakers so its easier to get a pair instead.

This may change with High Def DVD with the advent ot Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD as well and DTS-HD.

DD Plus can handle 7.1 Discrete channels witha max of something outrageous like 13.1 :-O
