5.1 electrostatic speaker problem

Alright guys Im new to this, so I have a few questions.

1. I have 6 Ohm speakers running off of a 8ohm reciever. Now I was told this would be fine but the problem is the sound if very soft even when I crank the volume. I have tested my my speakers on a Teac AD-G9320 rated at 100W per channel, and a Pioneer vsx-14 Elite rated at 100W per channel.

I found that the Pioneer sounded alot better, but still very quiet. The speakers I tested it on before I bought it was a denon AVR-3805, and it was loud! My speakers are rated at 6ohm and my recievers are 8ohms. What could be the problem.....

2. should I just be running a receiver that will support 6ohm....

Here is the setup test.
Recevier: Teac ADG 9320 and Pioneer VSX-14
Wires: 12G Copper with Teflon shield....
Audio: Optical
Audio Setup: 5.1 both receivers set to digital signal
Sub: AR Directional sub wire

Speaker Info:

Frequency response: 280Hz - 24KHz
Impedence: 6 ohm
audio power 20/80watts (music)

Sub Info:
Power out put 120W
Input Impendace: 27 K ohm
Frequency response: 30 HZ - 280 Hz

Any help would be great!

6 Ohm speakers on an 8 Ohm rated receiver should not be that big of a deal; it shouldn't result in very low output. I believe electrostatic speakers require alot of power to produce loud volumes (being that they are often very inefficient). Do you happen to know the sensitivity of the speakers? [It would be something like 86 dB/1W/1M].

Have you checked all the other usual culprits like speakers wired out of phase or possibly stray wires from one terminal contacting metal or another terminal? Have you calibrated the levels of each channel?

It may simply be a case of insufficient power to drive low sensitivity speakers to loud volumes.

Checked... double checked and triple checked... wires

Hi,

I checked the cables... I really think ur right about the receiver coming down to power.... Here is the complete info on the speakers

- Frequency response : 280 Hz ~ 24 KHz
- Sensitivity : Equivalent to 86 db / 1 W / 1m
- Impedance : Normal 6 ohm
- Audio power ( min / max ) : 20 / 80 Watts ( music )

When I was testing the speakers they were paired with a denon AVR-3805. I was going to go towards Yamaha but I have noticed that the denon receiver supports 6 ohm and 8 ohm. Since ohm isn't a problem when the receiver is 8ohm I guess yamaha is still ok....

What I really want to know is since the receivers I have tested has 100W per channel... I can't see 120W making that much of a diff... could you give me some insight about this. I know the denon will push 160w at 6ohm and 120w at 8ohm... would this be the best setup?

I can't see wiring being a problem since its all new 12G copper.... I do fine the Pioneer alot better then the teac.

I can see power being an issue... but would it even help if I get a receiver that will have more wattage? is that the biggest factor?..... how do I determine if I will have enough power????

Any help would be great!

Thank You
