jcinwylie : I hope someone can help me. I'm a newbie to this sort of thing. I just bought an H/K 7200 and added a set of axiom m60's(fronts), VP 150 (center) and QS8's (rears) with Hsu VTF2 (sub). I use the system mostly for movies but am beginning to listen to music from cd's a whole lot more. My question is regarding the 5.1 connections from my (sony) dvd player to my reciever. I connected the audio from dvd player to reciever using optical. That's all. As I read thru this forum I am beginning to get confused. I think I am hearing that in order to hear my dvd video/audio, I need to connect my 5.1 connections in addition to the optical. Is this correct. Its an old dvd player. Please help.
Actually, if your player does not support DVD-A or SACD (it will say in the instructions), you do not need the 5.1 analog hookups.
For standard DVD and CD playback, all you need is a video connection like standard RCA type video plug, S-Video or Component video cables. Again, this is for video. For Audio, your optical is fine. Optical (toslink) and Digital Coax are the best options for audio.
The 5.1 analog connections are for DVD-A and SACD players. These are hi-rez formats for music, not video. If your DVD player does support DVD-A and/or SACD, you will need the
5.1 hookups IN ADDITION to the cables mentioned above.
It get's confusing.
What model Sony DVD player are you using?
