*SOLVED*

Hey guys! Not a frequent visitor as I have had my setup up and running for a handful of trouble free years. Just recently bought an 8 series 75" samsung 4k TV, and an 8 series 4k player from samsung. Quickly realized that my Pioneer Elite receiver doesn't pass the latest HDMI, so I was only getting 1080. Running directly from my player to the TV I get gorgeous 4k, but of course I lose my sound.

So how to connect this up? Or can I even do it? I quickly see there is an extra output on the back of the 4k player, an optical audio out. HAZZA!! I have an optical input on the receiver! So I hop on over to Amazon and get one here in a couple days (standard toslink digital audio cable). Cable fits into the 4k output just fine with a nice click, but doesn't fit into the input on the receiver at all. although a similar shape and same basic size, it's a different plug. DAMN! Attached is a picture of all three (sorry for the fuzzy pic of the cable, youll get the idea, im sure).

So what is the story? Can I not use this audio input on my pioneer? I don't want 4k with my audio system missing from the equation. I'm sure I missing something simple... I think there is a different optical plug that I just can't seem to find with my google-fu.

Help, audiophiles!

Yes, the only way to keep 4k from BD to a TV (if AVR doesn't support 4k) is a direct cable.
The cable you show on the blurry picture does look like a regular optical Toslink and should absolutely fit either optical inputs on the avr. if it doesn't try getting a different cable since the idea is right, if it doesn't fit, then your existing cable is out of spec. also, notice the plug is not square - it has a guide on one side.

Thanks for the reply. The shape of the hole in the receiver is definitely different, albeit just a tiny bit. It doesn't have the two bumps/guides on the sides. It's not the cable for sure. It doesn't go into the receiver in the slightest.

ok, looks like your BD player has a second HDMI out, try using it to connect it to AVR, you would get more and better sound options that way

BAH!! Nevermind fellas.. thanks for your time. Figured it out. It goes in 90degrees, not oriented like the player. Not sure why I didn't try it sooner.. mental block!

Works great. 4k + sound system! woot! Here is a picture for your efforts:

Seriously, I have no life.
Yes, you do have to rotate the optical cable as the key tab can be in any of the 4 quadrants.
Next time you will know. ;) :D
