4K pass through vs upconverter

Okay so I just bought a new Sharp 4k tv (lc80uh30u) for my family room set up. I have a current Denon AVR 2309ci there. I don't think this will pass through the 4K. The HDMI wires in the walls and used all are already 4k capable.

I need a new reciever.

Do i get 4K pass through or one that upconverts

So for 4K content from DVd or xfinity box i know pass through is fine.

For the other content, does it help to be upconverted at the receiver level and again at the TV level? Or is some dude trying to sell me bunk.

You need a receiver that can pass through 4k content natively. IMO, upconverting doesn't net you very much since the source isn't 4K.

Up conversion like this in a receiver is just pointless and can actually decrease quality as the TV probably has better up-conversion processing because this is one of the primary roles of the TV where it is just an add on feature of your amp. Back in the day up-conversion did make a lot of sense and still does for some situations because it would convert the old analog SD signals from legacy equipment connected to the AVR into a nice modern HDMI signal and the transparent overlay the AVR displays looks better in full HD like this as well. But 1080p->4k is junk and if your receiver does have it you can turn this feature off so it passes sources straight for maximum quality.
