Hi guys,

My girlfriend's parents are looking to buy a 40" LCD for normal use. They're contemplating the Sony KDL40-V2000 but I had a look at the specs online and I'm not impressed.

Do any of you have any experiece with this model? Are there better options considering the 2000 - 2500 euro budget they're on? (I'm a plasma man myself, I don't know anything about small LCD's....)

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

HD

Euro budget, eh? All I can say is that you can get one heck of a deal in the states on a 37" and 40". I'm not sure if they sell Olevia where you are, but the 537H 37" flat screen is going for $799, and their 40" just under $1000. I didn't care for the Sony's to spend 50% more.

Never heard of that brand before, I'll search for it thanks. I guess my main concern with the Sony is it states a 450 brighntess which I think is crap. Is this supposed to be ok in LCD-land?

let me tell you this ...

specs wise, the samsung tramples all over the sony e.g. contrast ratio, brightness, alleged number of colors, etc.

but the sony simply has the better picture.

I have both sony and samsung btw ... both 40" ... both 1080i
telling you my model numbers won't help because of our different locations, but I'll upload the pics of the LCD's that I have.

you guys (in north america) are lucky ... you have the cheapest LCD tv's I've seen ... to think the LCD's are made in asia!

even the sony's were cheap.

If it must be a LCD, I recommend the newest generation Sony Bravia units. As Mike said, they are better (subjectively), then even the Samsungs. I have not personally found a more natural-looking LCD television series as compared to the new high end Sony. However, they still can not equal a decent plasma from what I can tell. :) Unfortunately, the manufacturer specifications are not that useful, because just as with amplifiers and/or speakers, the manufacturer published numbers may not be all calculated or measured in the same way, nor may all of the important specifications relevant to perception be provided in the first place. Just one example: when is the last time that you noticed a color gamut map/plot provided for each model? That is a critical factor in image quality, but I have not noticed manufacturers providing this data to customers on a regular basis.

450 is fine. Don't go by specs. Go by pq and the ability to tweak the picture. The Olevia's have almost every tweak available to dial in the pic. My HD with the ATSC tuner is drop dead gorgeous, and nicest of all - the standard def cable channels are very good. I've seen a lot of higher end flat screens not do justice to SD programming.

Thanks for the feeback guys, I'm gonne tell them to get the 40 inch Sony Bravia. For some reason they didn't like plasma, although the 42 inch Panasonic goes for about the same price as the Sony LCD....I guess they're a bit worried about energy consumption, but I'll tell them to check out the panny as well in the stores.

Cheers,
