I've seen this on a few other forums, and it's not yet known whether or not this is potentially harmful to the console. While I doubt that it is, it's not something I would do on a regular basis. If it was meant to be done often, it would have been included in the owners manual, and Sony has never made any mention of this feature, and there is probably a reason for it.

One of the comments on it said a Sony rep recommended this procedure to a PS3 owner that had problems with his PS3. I would be curious to know how this is done on the 60 gb model. I found one individual that tipped the 60 gb on end to get it to do something similar, but I believe that was a protection feature that keeps people from putting the PS3 on it's fan side.
