I have a pair of "proficient" gl6 speakers rated @4ohm. i also have some floor standing pinnacle 5 element speakers (1050) rated @8ohm and i have some mirage premium omnipolar bookshelf speakers rated @8ohm. I haven't purchased the receiver yet, but a Sony rep told me the dn1040 receiver would be fine for this setup. My idea was to put floors as L/R, the gl6's on the sides, and the mirage's in the back... will this work?
I'm just worried it will beat up the amp or the speakers. i have yet to buy a center btw. i was looking for a decent pinnacle to match the L/R.

Should be fine, especially in surround duty. That receiver has a decent power supply and should do nicely.

I don't trust sony's ratings and they wouldn't be my first choice, however the review for the 1040 was pretty good, so I'd say you'll be fine.

According to Sony they've hired a new engineer when they started the STR-DH/STR-DN series receivers that placed more emphasis on audio and specifically placed heftier power supplies in them. I supposed that could have only been that run and maybe the subsequent releases have scaled that back.

The older ES models were quite good, both from a feature and power standpoint. The STR-DE series was really their downfall, because that long generation were just awful.

Woefully undersized power supplies.
