I am in the middle of a move and plan to do a 4.1 channel setup at the new house, and I have an old Yamaha 5.1 receiver lying around. (HTR-5830 I believe) Because I have all the stuff packed up and ready to ship at the moment I can't really verify if the receiver will allow me to configure 4.1 instead of 5.1. Does anyone have experience with this? If the Yamaha won't do it, what would be an alternative? Thanks.

Sure, it will do it. In the setup menus you tell it what speakers are connected. If by 4.1 you mean fronts and surrounds and subwoofer, but no center channel, it will mix the center signal into the fronts. That is known as a 'phantom' center.
