you know from a marketing and sales standpoint bringing 3D to homes is very clever. In the old days you went out, looked at wall of TVs, paid for it and that was it. Everyone watched, everyone enjoyed, whether it was just you or a house full of guest it didn't matter if you could find a seat you could watch. With 3D content now everyone that wants to partake needs glasses. And if the rest of the world is like me I sit on / break / lose my regular glasses constantly. So now manufactures have a way to potentially continue the cost of using your TV with certain content for as long as you make more friends / babies / or break your glasses.

that is unless the glasses-less displays get much better which they probably will

Active shutter glasses are the technology expected to be used by the vast majority of 3D manufacturers.
Then I would say that the technology remains not ready for anything other than niche' usage at home.
