3D at home - Are we ready?

All Pixar movies going 3-D. Disney will follow, but not with all it's movies.

Why?

Samsung TVs are already 3-D ready.

Also, don't DVDs sales make more money for studios than movie tickets?


Finally, my question…
How long before we are enjoying full 3D blockbuster movies at home?

10 years? 5 years? Less?

If 3d glasses are required I doubt it would work too well, especially for home cinema, half of us can't even find our sunglasses when we want them

3-D has never been been well implemented. Those dumb plastic glasses, nah.

I have never been able to watch more than a few minutes of 3D without getting a headache. Perhaps the technology has improved? I am looking forward to hologram-based displays (viewable from all sides, no glasses.)

There is a huge push to have 2500 theater screens setup for digital projection in the next 3 years for the release of several major 3D movies, including Cameron's Avatar and something Lucas has in the works.

There are several "computer" LCD monitors out already that allow 3D without glasses but you have to be in the perfect seating position or it does not work.

Secondly the polarized glasses you have to wear for 3D should not give you a headache unless the 3d implementation is poor.

Disneyworld has 4-5 3D movies that are absolutely insane. If they are any indicator of the future it sure looks bright.

As far as home setups?
We don't even have 1080p sets mass market. Figure another 10 years on home 3D being ok and affordable.

As far as I can tell, the headaches are caused by Binocular rivalry.

Regarding 3D, it's about the refresh rate. The faster the refresh rate, the easier it is to watch.

Plus, I don't think finding the glasses will be any harder than finding the remote.

Finally, I agree with Dezoris. It'll be at least 10 years. I think the tech will be cheap enough for indie studios to do live action 3D.

Then maybe we'll see some good 3D movies.
