Im trying to hook my xbox 360 to my receiver and have it play to 4.1 but im having some problems i have a pioneer vsx-d812 receiver.. here is how i have things set up.. i have my 360's audio and video cables running to my receiver to the dvd/ld(Right/left inputs) and to the video to the dvd in.. from there i have my 4 speakrs set up to the front(l/r) and surround(l/r) i can hear the audio out the the front speakers but not the surround..(i tried changeing speakers to make sure they work and same thing)... i also have the receiver set to 4.1 in the menu for speakers... i have the videoout coming from the receivers monitor out using a coax video cable to a converter box and then from there a standard cable to my TV but i get no picture.. if i hook the xbox video to the converter box it shows fine jsut not when i run it to the receiver.. also i cant for the life of me get the surround to work.. i even tried hookin the dvd video to the coax(dvd input) .. ive never been able to get this to work even with a regular dvd player...any help would be great on this.

The problem is that you're only sending a stereo audio signal to your receiver, so you're only going to hear stereo. You need to use a digital connection from your XBox 360 (or your DVD-Player) to get the full 5.1 sound, such as an optical or coaxial digital connection. I believe that the Xbox 360 supports an optical audio connection, so all you need is an inexpensive Toslink cable. There's no need to buy an overpriced Monster cable, both Parts Express and Ram Electronics sell them for only a couple bucks each.

The issue (i think) is you're running your L/R into the DVD discrete input, which is expecting 6 inputs.

You have a few options:
1. Hook it up via the Toslink as jaxvon suggested. This is an "add on" cable. The regular HD cable doesn't give you this. This is the easiest.

2. If you have an HDTV, run the sound into that, then from your TV to your receiver (this is what i'm doing via digital out).

3. Run the sound out from the Xbox into a non 6.1 input (CD, VCR, etc) and set the receiver to output in Dolby Pro Logic IIx or some other surround mode. This is the cheapest.

The other thing to make sure is that you have your Xbox set to output in surround to begin with.
