it has been said many times. that a 32" @ 1080 is no better than @ 720.
for watching tv, i find this true. but i have not watched a BD nor played any games on my 32" lcd. is 1080 better on a 32" for BD and/or games ?

thanx

I'll jump in, but I won't be surprised if the experts correct me. :) There are some really knowledgeable people here on that stuff.

There are a couple of things that I'd like to mention:
  1. The argument about 720 versus 1080 regarding whether people can tell a difference is based on the combination of screen size and how far away you are from the screen. That's because it's based on viewing angle and human optical resolution. So, someone may benefit from going to 1080 on a 32" TV if they sit close enough, while someone else may only need 720 on a 50" TV because they sit far enough away.
  2. I would prefer to have a TV that could display the native 1080p resolution of a blu-ray because it requires conversion to display that on a 720p display. Some of the video information needs to be removed. I can't say if that's noticeable in practice, but I'd prefer to have 1080.

Honestly speaking. At a normal viewing distance of 6'-8' with a 32" one will not see any difference in resolution. Look for better black level performance & processing in these sizes. Panasonic and Samsung tend to get recommended most in this category.

The biggest problem with any LCD at any size is off axis viewing. Unless you are in the sweet spot, the black level and color accuracy shift dramatically. This is where my recommendation of a Panasonic comes in above the rest. They have some of the best off axis response I have seen in any LCD at any price point.

thats what i think. my mother-in-law wanted a new tv, so she asked me, and her son (he lives 1000 miles away). he said get a 1080. i said don't waist your money. i got a toshiba 32" for her. the picture is fantastic, like my toshiba 32". she only watches broadcast tv.

my 32" lcd toshiba is FANTASTIC in both black levels and off axis veiwing. i can stand off to the side so far that i can hardly see the screen. and there is NO issue seeing what is on it.

glad your enjoying it:) are those measured black levels that are fantastic? and its not an issue of seeing the picture but at what cost compared to direct viewing? There are not many options in the 32" Display range, so LCD is the choice unless you move up in size buy a Vizio 32" plasma, or go down in size and get an OLED;)

It is not so much seeing what is on the screen as to how accurate the representation of the image is off axis. None of the LCD's I have seen compare to a plasma much less a CRT for off axis viewing (picture quality & black levels) and that includes those I have recommended.

I am not trying to make this a debate or anything, just stating my experience. I wish there was another option in the 32" category besides LCD at a reasonable price point.

The Toshiba's I have seen were OK. About mid-pack for performance. I would only recommend last year's Panasonics & newer along with the Samsungs (above the base models) if picture accuracy and black levels (i.e. true contrast) is what one is after.

The other thing I have a hard time with is the fact that I could pick up a Panasonic TC-42X1 for around $750.00 at most places. Good quality 32" sets will run you about $100.00 - $150.00 less. For that difference, I would save an extra month and pick up the plasma and have no worries. I would get much better PQ and accuracy an 10 diagonal inches more screen. Of course, that assumes physical size of the set is not a constraint. Just my opinion.

fair enough. i'm not a pro at this stuff, so i will not debate one who is. i am happy with my sets. the SD sets are just garbage can fill as far as i am concerned.

Yeah, IPS panels really aren't bad. As far as I know Panasonic is the only brand to openly state that they use them in their LCD line.

The picture will be visible or even vibrant from an extreme angle on any decent modern TV. No one is disputing that. What people are saying is the gamma will change when the viewer moves as little as a few degrees from the center of the axis. That is unacceptable to anyone who takes picture quality seriously.

ok, gotcha. i'm not experienced enough to be that critical. and i don't think i want to be. ignorance is bliss sometimes. finding flaws brings me down, so i'm not going to go looking for them. i am thrilled with the PQ of my sets. and i want to keep it that way :)

Your application probably doesn't require you to be that critical. In that case, it's a good thing you didn't waste your money on features that wouldn't add anything to your overall experience. Being happy with the performance is all anyone could ask of their TV. Maybe you should be glad that you didn't spend 30% more when you didn't need to.

you are correct. when my gear is off, i love what it is. when my gear is on, i love what it does = immerse me in the movie/music.
