Hi guys,

I own 2 pretty big 3 way speakers. They have adjustable mid and high range knobs on them and a big 12-14 inch woofer. My question is, i just got a new 400 watt receiver for them and im having problems. In the beginning last night i hooked everything up and they seemed to work fine. But this morning i went to turn em on, i cranked the volume and it smelled like burnin. One of the speakers looked like it was about to ight on fire (The woofer). The other one seemed fine. Now when i crank the receiver just a little the speakers just shut off. and the one with the burned woofer makes sound but its extremely quiet compared to my other one. Can someone help me? I also am using really crappy guage wire between both of them, if that could be it. PLZ HELP! i cant send pics more info anything

Thanks guys

How does a speaker liook like it's gonna light on fire? Does it glow or something?

Sounds like your amp fried the speakers, dude. Get some marshmallows, hershey bars, graham crackers, some long sticks and invite some friends over for s'mores.

You're gonna have to tell us some more specifics if you really expect a serious answer. What amp? New or used? How loud did you play it? What speakers? Are they near a fireplace?

Then again. perhaps your amp died and took a speaker with it. It happens...

From the description, sounds like Cerwin Vega from the 80's. I would imagine the woofer foams are toast from being old, and the woofers need to be rebuilt. Anyway, I would check the suspension action of the woofers with your hand. You should be able get the foam surround to fall apart pretty easy. It's time, and has nothing to do with the brand. It's just what happens to foam surrounds.

You can send the woofers to Cerwin Vega to be rebuilt, or email them with your problem and location, and they can refer you to a local shop to have the repair done.

You can also enter your zip code to locate a local service center.

DC off set

Your amp/receiver is a poor one. The output transistors are direct coupled to the speakers without a protection circuit. One or both of the power transistors burnt out and may be the driver transistors also. When this happens in a direct coupled amp without protection, the speaker is connected directly to the DC driving voltage of the power transistors. This as called a massive DC offset.

This DC offset welded the wire turns of your woofer voice coil together. You now have only a few turns of wire in the voice coil instead of a lot. That is why the speaker is quiet. The device driving the speaker needs service. The woofer needs a new cone and voice coil.

Most speakers do not have a resistive impedance curve, they have complex inductive ones usually. I strongly suspect your amp did not like the impedance curve presented by those speakers, and hence everything went nuclear.

Sorry to give you the bad news
