2nd Question; Atmos...From the Best Buy Guy

Quick little update, I'm now the Sony Rep for BB; a small, but significant promotion.

Subject: Atmos

As a sales person, I need to describe Atmos to the public. And while I think I understand Atmos, I'm not 100% sure, because DQ (D if for DellaSala, and Q is for Q; I'm pretty sure he's part of the Continuum) always talks about how "bouncy speakers" are a bad idea, but really doesn't describe it in laymen terms how sourcing the speakers in the ceiling is a good thing...in laymen terms.

This is my description to customers; let me know if it's honest.

For the most part, I describe a standard 7.1 surround sound system, with the main points being, the front Left, Right, and Center speakers are your "bed" channels, and they primarily handle your "pertinent" information. In summation I actually say, "if we were a movie, us talking would be pertinent information".
Then I go on to describe the surround sound speakers as "satellite speaker", whose main function is to handle special sound effects.
Finally I describe the Atmos speakers; I explain that they are "height channel speakers", and that there are two ways to achieve height Channel, "The wrong way, and the right way". After a brief explanation, I go on to describe the affect of height channels this way, "Atmos speakers fill in the "gap" between the pertinent information and the sound effects with the ambient sound, creating a 3D sound".

I welcome any and all corrections... and I mean any and all; I just want to make sure that I have the correct information.

Why so complicated to someone who needs an explanation?

I agree with Herbu. K.I.S.S. They want to know what it does and how it benefits them, not how it does it.

when people buy cars they want to know how it benefits them, not the mechanics of how it runs.

+1 on herbu and markw. Don't try to explain the details of Atmos processing unless your customers ask for it. Your explanation of the Atmos height channels looks to be incorrect anyway. For Atmos, there is a 9.1 bed soundtrack that is mixed like normal soundtracks. The rest is just effects objects flying around through however many channels you have. Atmos is a hell of a lot more than ambient sound. It is any sound. It can be dialogue, music, ambience, anything. In fact, one would expect ambient sounds to lay more in the bed soundtrack, and effects sounds to be used as Atmos objects. The Atmos object sounds are used in all the speakers, not just the 'height' channels.

If you are getting a lot of questions about Atmos from your customers, you would do well to read this.

Well, I couldn't agree more with both of you, on the sales portion of my question. And that might be my problem, I'm so excited by Atmos, that I want to teach, rather than sell. OK, note taken, more selling, less teaching.
