2nd Connection: Cable Box ===> TV & AVR

Hi,

I am interested in hooking up my cable box to both my TV and AVR. (I anticipate doing this to allow use of my TV without requiring use of the AVR.)

TV: Samsung LCD 630

Cable Box: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250HDC

AVR: Pioneer VSX01TXH

Which connection should use the HDMI connection from the cable box?

How do I create the 2nd connection? What cables do I use? What connections on the back of the cable box do I use?

There are many ways to do this but I think the easiest would be to run the hdmi right to the tv , then run a digital audio only cable to the avr,use the sound from the tv whenever you want then when you need the sound through the avr just turn off the sound in the tv.

I would send the HDMI to the TV, so you get picture and sound to the TV in the situations where you don’t whish to use the AVR for sound. I would then make a second connection with digital coaxial or toslink to carry sound to the AVR when you actually want to us it. You will need to shut the TV’s speakers off when you useing the AVR, if you want to do things properly. But you will need to turn them back on when go to shut the AVR off

What's the difference between using digital coaxial or toslink? Is one preferable to the other?

I would say whichever one is cheaper or more convenient for you to use, is the right choice. The differences between these two options are so minuscule that there not worth considering unless you have "special" circumstances

I saved my toslinks for HdDvd since it doesnt have rca digital out on my hd a-35, besides they are the same anyway, It really is your choice,if the equipment is real close the shorter toslink seems to look neater imo.
