I have a panasonic 36" hdtv that does the anamorphic squeeze.I have a marantz dv6500 player. On dvd movies I am getting the black bars which i know is normal but i also get a lighter shaded bar underneath the top black bar and above the lower bar.I never noticed this before on my previous dvd players. Can someone tell me what's going on.thanks.

That TV is 4:3 shaped, no? Cos I get the same thing on my 27" SDTV when I apply the "anamorphic squeeze". But if I set the TV's picture mode to "Movie" -- which, among other things, darkens the picture a bit -- that lighter shaded bar becomes darker, very very close to the black of the black bar produced by the anamorphic squeeze. Give that a try: lower the brightness of the picture, and you may find that the two bars more closely match.

cheers,

I agree with supervij. I bet if you look very closely you can see the lighter shade of black in other parts of the picture too. AVIA or DVE calibration discs are great for dialing in the brightness setting.
