I am looking for help on connecting two components (cable box and DVD player) that have digital coax outputs to my amplifier that has only one digital coax input.
- Is there a Y adapter that can be used?
-Can a low cost a/b switch be used?

Yes, there are many switches of the type you require - even Radio Shack sells them.

Here is a link to a switch that would work perfectly for you. It is from a company that specializes in that kind of thing and their products have received many favorable reviews.

This might be obvious, and if it is, sorry, but are there any optical digital (Toslink) inputs on the amplifier?

Regards

There is one optical input on the amplifier. Neither the cable box nor the DVD player has optical out.

There are also coax to optical adapters available at Parts Express. PN#180-096. $17.95 ea.

You should be able to use an inexpensive video switch to switch between two coax devices too, since coaxial digital utilizes basically the same specifications for video cables. You should not use a Y adapter.
