2 Channel DVD Audio with MSB DACII and Samsung HD-950

I just purchased a Samsung HD-950 to replace an old Pioneer DVD player. I used this player as a transport to an old MSB DAC II which I planned to retire today. However, I just set up the Samsung with downsampling off and in PCM 2 Channel mode (I am a 2 channel guy). Low and behold the rarely used 96khz light flickered on and I am now listening to this thing as it was meant to be heard years ago. Hard to believe that the MSB DAC was ready for this technology when I bought it over 3 years ago. The Samsung sounds ok, but this DAC realy brings it to life...can anyone shed a little light on the technology involved with this? Why did this work and what is the exact resolution I am getting? A bit stunned to say the least.

Some (not all) DVD-A discs come with a stereo high resolution track. This is usually 24-bit 96 kHz stereo. If the DVD-A disc does not have a high-res stereo track, you will only be listening to the DD compressed stereo track.

BTW, not to diss your MSB, but I would hope it could handle a 96 kHz signal, hell my nearly 8-year old 2nd gen Sony DVD player has 24-bit 96 kHz DACs.

Wasn't aware of 24/96 digital output

I just wasn't aware that the unit would output in 24/96 to my DAC. Thanks for the post.
