2 Channel Audio Questions

I am 71% done setting up my equipment.

Ok here is my question,

RX-V2500, and 2 Channel CDs.

I have a Panasonic XP50 hooked up via Toslink and also via analog 5.1 outputs to the multi-channel in.

My Front Speakers are set to small and the sub crossover is set to 80hz.

The only way I can get 2 channel audio and the sub to help is when I choose 2 channel stereo on the reciever.

Problem is it sounds like crap compared to to using Direct or the multi-channel in.

So how can I run 2 channel stereo mode with the reciever using the sub while having the clarity of direct or multi-channel in?

couple ideas

When you run direct or multi channel in, the settings on your receiver are ignored. I don't know what type of speakers you have, are they full range? Try the speaker settings on large. Does your sub have an LFE input and speaker inputs or just an LFE input? If it has speaker inputs, try running your speakers through the subwoofer. That way you can use the full frequency response in all modes, because the receiver sends the Left Right signals into the subwoofer, which takes on the 80 hz and less, and sends the rest onto your main speakers. My Yamaha has lots of sound fields, and for stereo, the sound fields only detract, because it adds too much to the center, and gives extra bass. I have full range fronts, so I listen to stereo in direct mode, which I agree sounds much better. Let me know if either of those ideas works for you :)

I have full range fronts, like you Def Tech BP10B.
I have a supercube 2, I don't know if I would want to power the speakers with the sub, it has a 1250 watt built in AMP but would that be better to do?

Details ?

What is it that makes it sound like crap ? I'm guessing you are either missing low end, or have too much low end. In either case, you need to work on blending in the sub.

If it's odd sounding and echoing or somehthing like that, you need to turn off any simulated surround modes.

If it's not enough bass: If your Rcv has a sub mode such as L+R/Sub, try setting the speakers to large and running this sub mode. This will use the full range of the main speakers, and also push some bass out to the sub. You might also need to simply raise the sub trim level.

If it's too much bass: Turn down the sub or set the trim level lower for the sub.

Run a sub cable from your 2500 lfe/sub out to the subs inputs. Use a y splitter to utilize both l and r inputs on sub. Set sub to about 100 hz. This is not going to matter much because you are going to control the freq's being sent to sub via the recv'r. But setting the sub itself to around 100 will cover it. Now, using the recvr's onscreen display set spekr's to small, set bass out to both, and crossover to 80hz. Now play a disc in the straight mode or 2ch stereo mode. Using the osd again, switch between normal and reverse polarity/phase for the sub. Which gives you the fullest bass? use it. You can continue to listen to your jams while switching between sub only or both(front and sub) on the bass management section of your recv'r like I had you do earlier. I have Boston powered towers and my setup is spkr size-small, bass out-both, x-over-80hz, phase-reverse. It kicks arse! Cheers and good luk! Btw...pure direct mode bypasses sub out! you can only utilize sub/lfe by using straight mode, 2ch stereo, or when multi channel sources are detected. Do you have the 2500's manual?

Pure direct with sub

To utilize pure direct mode with a sub, configure the main speakers as large and subwoofer and None. Connect main speaker level outputs to the sub speaker level inputs. Connect the sub speaker level outputs to the main speakers. In this configuration, the sub is not powering the main speakers, it is only applying the low/high pass filter to the main at the frequency you specify on the subwoofers dial.
