I mentioned this in another thread but it probably needs its own thread

I recently bought a Sony - 630W 6.1-Ch STR-DG710. After hooking it up I was extremely surprised to find out that it only does truehd in stereo and not 6.1. So I returned it.

My question is: Is that commom? do many receivers do this?

Does anyone have any recommendations for receivers that will give at least 5.1 true hd in the price range of 300-400 dollars?

My player has Truehd capabilities so I do not need the receiver to decode the Truehd

There are a bunch of AVR's that don't decode TrueHD internally. The 710 seems to be one of them. On the Sony site it says that it's a "pass through" unit which means that it doesn't actually decode the audio internally. It does say that it will play uncompressed audio which usually means MCPCM. You need to set the player to decode the audio and then feed it to that receiver and many others. You need to look for a receiver that is HDMI 1.3 and internally decodes the audio. There are a bunch they just cost more.

I apologize to keep bumping my own thread to the top but I have another question for the forum. I'm just the type of guy that needs to be spoon-fed answers. I also want to try to avoid more returns.

As i mentioned before, I have the HD-A2 and a HDMI cord.

Trying to get the possibility for TrueHD. Will one the below recievers work for that? I've looked at all the specs and it is my belief that all these receivers should work. But i have been fooled in the past.
