I realize that it is up to my ears, but i was hoping you could point me in the right direction i currently have a mehh logitech system (<= i spent more then double on headphones then the entire thing) anyway i listen mostly to music but somtimes movies. i also would like it to have a very tight but powerful sub.

Thank you in advance.

Look into the Behringer 2030p's or Infinity Primus p152 bookshelf speakers. For a receiver, look into something used on ebay or craigslist, there are a lot of good stereo receivers out there for around 100. For the subwoofer, look into a Hsu Research STF1, or Emotiva Ultra Sub 10, or Elemental Designs A2-250. That will all make a pretty decent 2 channel system for 500.

If this is for a larger room, I would get the Infinity Primus p362 floor standing speakers instead of the bookshelf speakers, and just skip the subwoofer for the time being.

Welcome Maxx

I realize that it is up to my ears, but i was hoping you could point me in the right direction...
Then it would be helpful for you to give much more info, such as:
Where you are. If you are in Romania, recommending a heavy sub from here in the US might not make sense, even though it does for a US resident. Or there might be someone local who say's you could drop by to listen to speaker X for yourself, etc.

Details about your room. How big, where do you sit...and where can the speakers be placed in relation to both. Apartment w/ neighbors. House?

What types of music do you listen to primarily. How loudly?

Etc, etc.

The more info, the more reasoned the given recommendations (hopefully ;)).

cheers,

AJ

For music you really want sealed sub like eD A3-250:
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_138&products_id=892
AVR like this will do:
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTX8555/Onkyo/TX-8555-100-watts-2-channel-Stereo-Receiver/1.html
(You'll have to x-over at sub and feed it speaker level)5
and Behringer's 2030p
http://www.pro-audio-warehouse.com/b2030p.html

total expense - $670
+1, although a decent ported sub should be fine for rap and trance. Volume counts and there isn't a ton of detail there.

For a computer system? You should check out the Audioengine A5s. You could pair these with a sub also, Audioengine has their own (S8) for $350 I believe. I have owned a pair of these for the last 6 months and they are very nice.
