I want to get my dad a 2.1 speaker system for his living room. This will be for music only. I'm looking for a very discreet, low profile system that will have decent audio quality, but blend into the room. There is the Bose Acustimass 2.1, but I'm wondering if there are other alternatives (around the same price range). Any help is appreciated.

I'll take a jab.
1./ How big is the room ?
Now, I'm from Canada so I don't know if your "sales" coincide with us, if in fact it's US prices, but
Klipsch Synergy F-30's towers (on super-sale here for $349/each) at BB-that's all he'll need trust me. -no sub-woof req'd
+ any good +50 watt 2.1 / 5.1 Rx will do, aka a Yamha RXV373 ... or similar/better at FS.
But, if his existing Rx already can deliver around +40 Watts RMS/per (2.1/Stereo) then he's already set.
...IMHO.
but again, depends on the "room" dimensions and permitted "space" you want for the SP's. Heck, you may even want this setup for yourself ?

If the room is smaller the Swan M50W might work. They provide a very clean and musical sound.

I think the Audioengine A5+ in natural finish is worth looking at.
