1st of all I wanted to say hi to everyone and I look forward to reading the upcoming posts to mine and others in the forum and look forward to learning as well as contributing here.

So... with that in mind my question is this.... I was looking to get a new DVD player as I bought a new Sony grand wega 50" KFE HDTV. As a DVD player I currently have a toshiba prgressive scan SD - 2700 (old one maybe 5 or 6 years old) and was wondering if I bought a upconverting DVD player and hooked it up with a HDMI cable would the picture quality be better than what I have right now.

These are the ones I'm loking at so far the Lg is at the TOP of the list from reviews I've read but my main question is will the picture be noticable better than what I have now.

Your first link didn't work for me.
But for things around the price of your second link, I would look at the Pioneer 588a, the Oppo (model?), the Panasonic S77, or the Onkyo DV-SP502.
Some of these are above that sony's price but are some of the best players on the market.
The Onkyo and and the pioneer share alot of the same electronics (almost identical) and the pioneer is in your price range. Both of these players are universal players (they can play pretty much any kind of disc). The Onkyo, which I own, has better build quality and I think it looks alot better.

All of these players will give you really good video quality, sound quality of the onkyo is really good, I haven't heard about the other's sound quality.

At this point in time, I think it would be a waste of money to upgrade to an upscaling DVD player. If you must upgrade now, buy a HD-DVD player. It upscales the low-def DVDs..............plus, it will play HD discs in pure High Defnition:cool:

As of right now, the HD-DVD selection is very slim, but it will only improve with time. Blue Ray will be hitting the market later this summer.

I was just planning on th eupgrade for the time being until the HD's and blu rays become more standardized and come down in price... I think for now I will probably go with one of the above and then wait for the PS3 to come out and use that for the HD's and SOny will have its Blue ray in the player from what I've heard.

I guess my biggest question is will the above players, either LG 531 or the panny be better than what I have right now... Toshiba 2700 non progressive scan but color stream (similar).

Cheers,
Matt.

Either should make a big difference if your player is non-progressive scan. Keep in mind that you will need to connect the player via HDMI to make it upconvert. If you connect with components, most will not.

I have tried over a dozen DVD players and read alot of reviews.

The Yamaha 657 is bar far, the best DVD inder $200.

BY FAR.

Blows away Oppo (horrible reviews), Sony and especially the Pioneer 588 (why this POS gets the accolades it does is baffling) . The Yamaha is awesome in every way. Top notch sound, PQ, and it will play EVERY DISC including Divx.

Now if you want a cheap upconverter, get the Panasonic 77 or 97. It got equal to better reviews for PQ than my Denon 2910 at a third the price.

Couldn't disagree more. The whole HD disk thing is an utter mess that will probably take another year or two before the dust settles. After buying my new player, I'm quite content to sit on the sidelines and watch the fur fly from the grandstand.

There are both leaders and followers as it relates to hobbyists keeping up with the latest technology....... Neither is right or wrong. Some are early adaptors, while others are not.

I think for now I'll but the LG or Panny and wait for the technology to settle on one sourse of HD. I'll buy both players try them out and return the one that I dont like.
