Hi Fellas,

I am putting together a system for one of my gal pals. She has a budget of $1000 for the whole shebang (A/V Receiver, 2 fronts, 1 center, 2 rears, and sub). Oh, and she needs in-ceiling for rears only. Any ideas for us?

Here are some I considering? Any thoughts?

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V659, Yamaha HTR-5860, or Onkyo SR504 = $250
Fronts: Axiom M3's = $320 (pair)
Center: Axiom VP100 v2 = $250
Rear: HD-380's = $150 (pair)
Sub: Velodyne VX10 = $145

Total: $1015

Any thoughts? (Yes/no) Any better alternatives to any of these?

Thanx in advance, boys! :)

Well, the receiver is 7.1 capable. Would they be up for 7.1 vs 5.1?

The HSU Ventriloquist system is 5.1 and with a sub (STF-1) its $500. These are small sats. so you should be able to wall mount them. If they won't work, you could make it 7.1 and use the in-ceiling speakers as surround backs.

Everything is that system looks decent except for the sub. Unless the room is small, its going to have a hard time filling it with bass.

Sounds like a good setup to me, except the sub as mentioned.

I would actually look at the Onyx X series speakers, which would drop your speaker budget by a bit - The X-series 5.0 package should be around $500, and their 5.1 package is just $774.

-is she pre-wired for the in-ceilings?

Edit: They are currently sold out of the satin black until March unfortunately but they still have the white maple in stock.

Your receiver choices in the $250 price range are more or less of equal quality/ value. Their features will be comparable too. Get whichever is cheapest.

I'd recommend using Axiom M3's for front and center... so get three in all. Dont get the rears since wiring in-ceiling will require additional costs.

Put the difference towards a SVS PB 10-NSD sub. This will probably provide the best bang for buck spent.

Thanx so far fellas.

She does already have the in-ceiling pre-wiring...so that won't be an additional cost. I appreciate the advice on a different sub though, but the ones you all mention will put her budget above $1000. Is there any better sub than the velodyne VX10 for @$150?

How about Polk Audio and Boston Acoustic speakers instead of Axiom?

Which would you all go with?

System A

Polk Audio PSW10 Cherry 10" 50-watt Powered Subwoofer $199.99

Polk Audio Monitor 50 CH Each Floor-standing Speaker $399.98

Polk Audio CS1 Cherry Center Channel Speaker $179.99

Boston Acoustics DSI255 Pair 5.25" 2-way In-Ceiling Speakers $149.99

Or

System B

Fronts: Axiom M3's = $320 (pair)
Center: Axiom VP100 v2 = $250
Rear: HD-380's (HTD) = $150 (pair)

I'd take the Axiom system over the Polk. How much can the subwoofer cost?

Denon 1707 = $400 online/$450 Crutchfield

Klipsch Quintet III = $400 online
or
Klipsch Quintet II = $299 from Vanns.com

Klipsch Synergy 10 Sub = $300

I have a similar set-up, (Denon 2805, Quintet II, Reference 12 sub, all of which are for sale -- wife hates the component look and wants a soundbar), in my living room (which is large - 18' x 18' x 14' ceiling), and it sounds fantastic. I like it as much as my dedicated theater's sound system, of which I spent 8x on...

We were watching/listening to the Dave Mathews Band on Storytellers via MHD last night with a group of friends and I just sat back and grinned - they still can't believe how good it sounds, given its diminuitive size. My wife isn't crazy about having 5 speakers in the living room, along with separate components for everything, but she loves the sound of it. I have a feeling she'll be displeased with the Soundbar, but that's not my call...

People often discount the Quintets as "computer speakers," but they sound really good to me, and they can handle clean power. If it's your first surround sound system, I'd go simple and inexpensive, and enjoy the Denon/Quintet combo.

New 1k system

The recommended 1k system on the beta audioholics site includes the Onix X-LS speakers and X-sub. If you go with these or other speakers, the Onix and HSU 8" subs will provide cleaner bass then most of the cheap 10" and 12" models.
