12'wx16'lx8'h potential HT - room size problem for definition?

With the above dimensions, will anything greater than 5.1 be indescernable? I'd like to deck my system out to the 9s with front effects and rear channels, but I'm just curious if I'll be wasting my time with that, given the small dimensions of the room.

Also, perhaps anything in excess of a quality HT-in-a-box might be overkill? Assuming I could eliminate any rattles or reverb, would it be unwise to place the sub in the closet?

Advice, like usual, is greatly appreciated.

Attached is a somewhat-to-scale illustration of the room and how I'd like it to be.

At least you have a good room for the setup :)

With the couch location, you should indeed try to do at least 6.1. That would be great. Not sure about the front effects. That needs to be explored maybe with a listening someplace that has it set up and the ability to eliminate the front effects and compare to 6.1 and see which appeals more to you.

I would not put the sub in the closet unless you can create a sub with infinite baffle, DIY project. Otherwise, you should try corner locations first, even the corners behind the couch?

What kind of TV, how large of a screen? I think a large screen needs a large soundfield, that calls for better speakers perhaps than you can get from a HT in a box? If you have no plans for a large screen, perhaps the HT in a box may do. If you wire it properly, allowing for future expansion for better video and audio, you will be set without a remodeling :D

Yeah, I don't think I want to give up a rear channel to have a total of 5 speakers in the front... it seem kind of ridiculous to me. What sounds, exactly, are processed through the front effects? I mean, it's not a discrete channel like the rear can be in a 6.1 configuration, so...

I'm still debating between a front projection and a 50"+ LCD/LCos/DLP... so, big. I intend to compliment my screen with equal sound, but I'm starting to think that due to the room size, I may reach the acoustic limit in a hurry. I don't really have the option to go back and do extensive sound-proofing either... We'll see.
