ok,guys,i've decided on a jvc dila 56" t.v.. my question is, IF i don't think i'll ever do the blu-ray or hd-dvd thing, is there any reason i should buy a 1080 over a 720 capable t.v.. i will be getting a sat.dish with hi def signals and also a good upconverting dvd player.i am concerned about s.d.quality.would a 1080 set convert these s.d.signals better than a 720? i have a choice between this years 1080 model and i guess last years 720 model. i think all is the same other than the resolution capability. i should mention that i saw a normal dvd playing thru a 720 set, and to my aged eyes, it was beautiful. thanx for any help you can give me P.S. i'm ready to pull the trigger pretty soon, and i really don't wanna shoot myself in the foot . thanx

If you're not getting Blu-ray or HD-DVD then get the 720P. Will u be gaming on a PS3 or Xbox360? Use it for a few yrs then get a new 1080P TV. This way you can end up with 2 TV's for approximately the same cost if you were to pay extra for the 1080P that you won't be using now.

thanks for your comments,J.V.. your 2 t.v.'s idea is a good one and i will definitely consider it. i will be gaming on it with an xbox 360, but not heavily. i'm still curious about s.d. i've read the whole j.v.c. thread over on a.v.s. forum, and a few people said you could tweek the 1080 so that s.d. looked very good. does anyone know if the 720 can be tweeked likewise? s.d. is very important to us, and i'm a little spooked by some of the s.d. stories i've read. price is a factor, but if the 1080 is WAY better at handling s.d. then i would pay the extra now.

One thing I've learned about these forums is that you have to take peoples opinions about products with a grain of salt. What one person notices as a nice sd picture another person will say its terrible. Everyones eyesight and hearing are different.

I agree with that statement and it certainly applies to audio as well; however, using a 1080p set to convert SD will result in more 'guessed' lines of the picture - after all that is what 'upconverting' is all about - it is interpolation and the result is only as good as the algorithm used to do do the upconverting. The 720p set will likely show better standard definition images than a 1080p set but as always you will have to let your own eyes decide.

Yes, it is easier to discern differences among televisions, though some still get consumed by the hype and marketing and are often dooped into the wrong product.
