I wish optoma or Mitsubishi (or at least a name brand) would release a low cost under $1500 720p LED DLP. I don't really need 1080p since my screen is 92". And I'm susceptible to rainbows so the LED is my ticket. I'm not a fan of LCD projectors (I own one) since the picture will degrade considerably as the polarizers age.

Just because the color wheel is gone does not necessarily mean that you will not be able to see rainbows. It depends on the refresh rate and I would be willing to bet that rainbows will be seen on the first generation LED projectors.

If the refresh rate is anything like the Saumsung LED DLP tvs, then I won't see Rainbows, and if don't see rainbows, 99.9999% of the population won't either.

Are you sure about this? I haven't exactly seen anything that defines what causes RBE, but I would be interested in reading what exactly would be the cause during a spinning wheel version of DLP and compare it to the single chip LED DLP version to find out if it would still be possible to get RBE.

Sounds like youre in the mood for a LCOS based pj, Sony HW10, VW60, JVC RS10/20. Pick one.............

The rainbow effect is an artifact of a color wheel...unless you have a bionic eye.

If these were remotely affordable. LCOS is shooting itself in the foot by not offering sub $2k prices for 1080p and sub $1300 for 720p.

Well, this is the question, because I've heard some reports over at AVS of people seeing it with LCD DLP RPTVs.

Is RBE due to the color wheel, or the use of a single DLP chip? Because if it is the single DLP chip, then the use of LED won't eliminate the issue.

The color wheel is only found in single chip DLP systems. LED based systems don't have a color wheel as they use red, blue, and green LED's that switch in sequence at a very high rate.

Since most DLP color wheels for home theater use Red Green and Blue individual colors, and never produce a true 'white', is it possible that this is what the human eye detects, and if so, LED using three separate colors would not remove RBE from the DLP equation since it still uses the one DLP chip and must briefly hit each color individually - which is really similar to how the color wheel operated.

I can easily detect 2x color wheels, but when they get up to 6x and 7x color wheels I can still pick up traces of RBE when I look for it. So, if LED operates at higher frequencies, which I fully believe as DLP chips themselves flip mirrors way faster, then I would definitely agree that LED eliminates RBE for everyone as long as it is properly calibrated.

I would love to see some diagrams (not overly technical) of how LED DLP is put together vs. traditional color wheel based models.

I'd be pretty stoked for a bulbless LED powered DLP projector, provided the lumens are there. I wonder what it'll cost?
