1080P for a 40" LCD?

I am hoping to buy a new TV when I get my tax refund this year. I have been reading and trying to understand all of the known issues with various models.

But, I see many conflicting reports about whether 1080p offers any real advantage with the 40" LCD's I am looking at?

What is the concensus here?

Thanks,

No opinions? I am most likely going to go for 1080p. In fact I am strongly leaning towards the Sony 40W3000.

Any thoughts about 120 vs. 60 hz?

Thanks,

Well, there are limits to the level of detail the eye can discern, and for 1080p on a 40" screen, you would need to sit closer than eight feet to even see a difference between 1080p and 720p, and five to six feet to see the full benefit of 1080p.

There may be times when my kids sit closer the 8 ft, so I may have to consider that. For my wife and I our chairs put our eys about 10 ft from the screen.

Any thoughts on whether 120hz is worth it or not?

Get the 1080P set. In a couple of years they probably won't even make 720P sets in that size. It's probably overkill but a little overkill never hurt anybody.

I have a 46" samsung lcd 720p and my friend has the same tv but in 1080p
i can hardly tell the difference between the two.
imo i cant justify 120 hz. it just looks so fake to me
i say just get a bigger 720p tv without 120 hz. you would be spending the same amount and getting a bigger tv

Unfortunately, we have a solid oak entertainment center that my wife is "very fond" of. That piece of furniture is what is limiting me to a 40" LCD.:(

So, I want the best LCD that will fit in the hole if you know what I mean.

Any opinions on the Sony 40w3000?

Thanks,

It's a pretty decent unit. ;) Few complain about Sonys.

Hey, Mark! I see you're getting settled right in. Are you going to sell your Infinity Betas when the Encores come in?

I was planning on getting the same Sony for my bedroom. But after finding this site I went with the Pioneer plasma 720P. Use the search than decide what's best for you.

The Pioneer plasma is an amazing set. I would worry more about the TVs ability to reproduce video accurately as opposed to concerning oneself with resolution, your eyes will see the difference in colours and shadow detail long before you tell yourself " wow look how many extra pixels I can see".

yeah i agree
the extra pixels are marginally better especially on a 40"

Hey there mkossler!

Yes, as soon as my AV123 x-Series Encores come in (I expect the first pieces to come tomorrow) I plan to put my complete Infinity Beta set up for sale.
