I have the following components: Panasonic DMPBD30K Blu-ray; Onkyo TXSR-805 Receiver; Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 1080 UB; all connections are Monster 1000 HDMI with a Rapidrun HDMI cable/plates.

I am able to get a picture on all DVD settings (480, 720, etc.) except 1080p (flickers). In addition, when I leave the setting on Auto (where formats like 720 or 1080 are automatically chosen) I also have a flicker effect.

I'm trying to determine whether the issue is a setting adjustment with one of the components or with the rapidrun cable (due to the 1.3a capabilities of all of my components, I am unsure rapidrun is 1.3 compatible).

Need some expert insight!

I'm sorry to hear you have a BD player. I meant I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your BD player. ;)

My experience with HD tells me flicker comes about because of:

1) incorrect fw upgrades
2) 1080p display at something other than 24Hz.

So the resolution for these two issue would be:

1) ascertain that your firmware is the most appropriate for your setup (not necessarily the latest version)
2) ascertain that your set at 24 Hz (w/ a 24 Hz capable display).

Also, if you post your connections and settings, and whether this only happens with only certain discs (or all discs), that may help elicit more direct responses. Hope that spins the wheels for you. Cheers.

Johnd,
This issue occurs with all discs (dvd or blu-ray). The projector is 1080p/24 capable, which I thought referred to 24Hz (frames per second)? How do I find out the best firmware release?
Thanks, Marco

Yes, 24Hz is 24fps. AVS has the best (that I've seen) forum for tweaking and fw resolutions.

Another rule of thumb is: throw out the handbook, knowledge and advice. Try different settings and use what looks best. I know it's archaic, but it sometimes proves useful, particularly given all the permutations of settings with a combination of a BD player and a projector.

As an aside, one nuance of the A30 is that in order to display 1080p, it first goes to 1080i. The monkey wrench is that almost all HD discs are 1080p. So one takes a 1080p source, turns it to 1080i, then deinterlaces it back to 1080p. The other problem is the the A30 has an inferior deinterlacer (many displays will have better). My point is: try 1080i as a workaround. This may look just as good, and cure the jitter. Post back and let us know. Cheers, John

One other suggestion ingemar, if all else fails (after trial and error with different settings...especially 1080i), try posting this question in the DVD forum. I don't believe this to be a projector issue at all (assuming your pj is set up to accept the 1080p/24Hz signal)...it has to do with the settings or firmware on your player. You'll get some informed response from BD owners there. Cheers.

You reference an A30...what are you referring to?

The Toshiba HD A30 HD player. I have a couple of A35's. Not BD, but still high def, and similar issues often exist between the two formats.

Firmware 1.6 completely solves -5db in LFE issue, among other things:

AVS thread:

The Panasonic does not have "forced" option for 24 fps. Which I don't see as an issue myself. I will say that it does look great if your pj is 24 capable.

AVS is the place to go for this stuff I've found. I would try both the BD-30 thread as well as the Epson 1080UB thread.
