DLP TVs are expected to be the first volume 1080p TVs available on the U.S. market, with affordable 1080p DLP TVs scheduled to be at retail as early as July. Manufacturers who have announced 1080p DLP TVs include LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, and Toshiba. Mitsubishi publicly introduced for the first time 5 new models featuring 1080p DLP technology, ranging in screen size from 52” to 73”, at their line show in Orlando, Florida. 1080p DLP TVs will complement the 720p high-definition DLP TV offerings available on the market, which total more than 75 models from more than 20 customers worldwide.

Will 1080p be coming to LCDs too (and I guess all other types of displays)? Or is there something special about DLP and 1080p together?

It actually is one of the few 1080p products that accepts a 1080p input into it as well.

Do we know if the new 1080p sets will accept 1080 inputs? I know in previous discussions, there were concerns they would not initially. Any updates???

From what I have been reading, it doesn't sound like they will - has to do with HDMI chips not currently supporting 1080p. I'll be happy if I'm wrong on that though, so no breath holding.

It also sounds like the 1080p is actually generated using the HD3 chip from TI which is a 960x1080 chip and a technique called wobulation whereby the 960 mirrors are in charge of 2 pixels not 1 to create a 1920 pixels necessary for 1080p. Supposed to look really good, but the HD4 chip coming out later this year will be the first full 1920x1080 DLP chip.

That's just what I have heard & been reading. No firsthand knowledge to really back it all up.

Any word on prices yet for the upcoming models? I've been itching to pick up Sony's XS, but if the new 1080's are within reach I'd probably opt for one of those instead.

Projectors

I am looking forward to developments like this to make 1080p projectors reasonable. I am happy with my current Sony (GWIV) 60 XS fro most viewing but I am really looking forward to a projector and a 100" plus image

There are already several displays on the market from 2K and up that can accept and display a native 1080p signal. LCDs are most prevalent right now, but there are a couple plasmas and even some DLPs that have been out for a while. The industry is delivering just what it promised last year, right when they said they would! I'm glad I held back and just bought an EDTV plasma. Next stop: 1080p City!

1080p display

Can you give me an idea of which plasmas and LCD flat screens to look at that display in 1080p ?

Actually, I'd like to know which displays ACCEPT 1080p as a standard part of their inputs, let alone display 1080p native.

I know there are PC monitors - 1920x1200 - but not much in the plasma/lcd world that I'm aware of.

Sounds like I'll be waiting a little longer. I figure I've done without one thus far, and once the 1080p is being supported, then I'll make the dive. :D

I thought of replacing my CRT 36", but at this point it's doing fine, except for wide screen. I may buy a deal in a 720p for "temp" use as my HT box, and then replace my CRT when I get a 1080p set.

In the meantime I will start the work on the audio side..... :p
