Buy a $500 reciever and buy better speakers

Buy a $500 reciever and get better speakers unless you truly need the extra features.

If you guys could help me out with this, I would REALLY appreciate it!

As my handle says, Im sitting here with my panties all wet, ready to treat myself to a nice lcd and surround sound and Im ready to buy it all online RIGHT NOW, but I need to talk to you some of you guru's to make sure Im making the right decisions! Im new to this.

This is what I want to do (and I could really use some help getting the best stuff for my needs):

1. Plug my xbox, dvd, & hd cable into the reciever in the closet. Then run the least amount of wires from the closet to the lcd on the wall.

What do I need to do to make it work in my closet? Repeater? How about the Harmony Remote?

2. Someone said the Yamaha v2600 had 2 HDMI in, and 1 HDMI out. So I could plug the stuff into the receiver and then just run 1 HDMI to the TV. I see the Denon 3806 and 2807 have similiar features as well. But Im not even stuck on those two. Im open to suggestions.

What receiver is good for what I need?

3. I want to get some thumping In Wall speakers, but not sure what to get. I dont want to spend more then 150 per inwall speaker.

What in wall speakers (in the $150/per speaker range) do you recommend?

4. Then I need a sub. Im going to put the sub in my walk in closet. There is an open doorway there. So Im hoping that it would still sound good in there.

Which sub to buy? And will it work in my closet?

5. I plan to buy it all online from the cheapest place that still has a low alexa rank and a lot of consumer feedback.

What should I be aware of when buying it online? Warranties.. etc?

6. I need to order the Samsung LN-S4692D 46'' LCD TV online as well.

Where do you recommend that I buy it from?

Im so ready to start ordering the parts, but I know I don't have all the info to make the right decions. I want to make sure it will all work together like I need it to.

Cheers,
BlowingCash

I wouldn't spend $1000 on a nice Yamaha 2600, or a Denon AVR-2807 and then ask about spending $150 for in-wall speakers.

I would ask about spending $800-$1200 a pair of speakers and less on the receiver. Even though those two receivers are awesome.

The speakers will make the biggest difference in sound quality. You'd be better off spending about 60% of your entire budget on the speakers.

The Yammie 2600 or Denon 3806 are both good receivers. You can't go wrong with either. But maybe one of the lower models would be better so you can spend more on the speakers. Here is Yammie's link to their HTR line. http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/HTIB/HTR.htm These can be bought online with a mfg's warranty. The RX-V line can be bought online but will not come with a mfg's warranty.

Agreed with above. A better question might be, what's your total budget? What's the max you want to spend for all components, and then work back from there. The thing that is going to make the biggest impact is your speaker choice...I'd devote most of my funds to their purchase.

Great advice everyone!

Ok so lets go backwards. I dont have a hard budget. I have the one Im telling the wife, lets say 1500 total on audio.

Then the one I'll really go to, say $2000 - $2500 ... lol

I definately need to get in wall speakers.

so with that budget in mind just for receiver and speakers what would you get?

In-Walls all around? 5.1? 7.1? Sub too?

Any picture of the room?

I want to go with either 5.1 or 7.1 because of my room layout.

I'd like all speakers to be in the wall.

The sub I'd like to put in the walk in closet that always has an open door.

My recommendation is to get atleast 3 of these for the front 3 speakers (Main, L&R, and Center)

http://www.speakercraft.com/our_products/lcr/aimlcr3.htm $999 but you should be able to get atleast 10% off.

Of take a look at these

I'm not to sure about putting a sub in a closet. I recommend an SVS sub. Most people put their subs in a corner of the room.

The most important thing is you need to go listen yourself. People can recommend, but only your ears will tell you what to get. :D :D :D

You can also give these guys a look-see for the inwalls. Fine speakers, great prices..... http://www.audioc.com/speakers1/speakers.htm The bottom line is get the speakers that sound best to you. There is no such thing as good/better/best or cheap/somewhat expensive/'break the bank'....it's only what sounds good to you that's important.

As for a sub, given that you're putting it in a closet (NOT the best place for audio reproduction), I'd go cheap...Advent, Xsub, etc.

As far as a receiver, unless you know you absolutely require HDMI interfacing, go with a less expensive model such as the Denon 3805 or Yamaha RX-V2500. These are great receivers that pretty much are last years models, so good prices can be had on them!

Good luck.

Yes I understand I need to listen to the inwalls. But Im looking for the brands to narrow it down to.

Does having the HDMI reciever help me in other ways if my cable box doesnt have an HDMI output?

For instance, is it going to clean up the image any?

Many people will pick one brand over another because they like one type of sound over another. We could throw you hundreds of brand names that are concidered good, but you really have to go out and listen to be sure that they are the sound that you want.
I know how exciting it is to go out and buy a new system. You're probably busting at the seems to get something NOW. But a little research will pay off for many years to come. Try not to be in a rush. You may get something ok, and then find out that you like something else much more a few weeks later. Then you'll be upset with yourself for years. Besides, the research can be a lot of fun. Find a few high end stores in your area and visit. You'll be glad you did.

HDMI really only lets you use fewer cables to hook everything up.

No, in your situation it will only offer a single cable solution to a multiple cable non-problem. Here is a link to an overview of HDMI....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

These are the reasons to get HDMI... http://www.hdmi.com/consumer/why_hdmi.asp

Keep in mind, too, that HDMI definitions and protocols are in transition and will change. I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V2500 and saved $350 by not getting the V2600....even though I have an HDMI television (but no Hi Def reception). Down the road, when there are more sources of High Definition and a mature HDMI system, I'll upgrade. Meanwhile, the ability to use one cable (that is not very secure in its mechanical design) over multiple cables is just not worth the money to me.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. LOL. :D

You're going to put your sub in a closet:confused:

You might want to reconsider...

I wouldnt spend 1k on a receiver, if all you're going to use are entry level 'in-walls'.

$1k seperates

For $1k, I would recommend the new Emotiva UL pre-pro and amp from AV123.com or the Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver.

Also check out the RBH Sound MC series inwall and inceiling speakers. Get them from a dealer or through audiophileliquidator.com. These are good enough for the AH whole house system so they should work great for you HT. RBH even makes inwall subs, but I would recommend a more traditional box sub so you can experiment with placement.
