i have a mid sized living room and currently have a 8" energy sub with my 7.1 athena set up. I was thinking of getting either the velodyne dsp 10 or 12. I think the 10 should be sufficient what are the advantages of going bigger? will it over power the rest of my system

If money is not an issue and it is the velodyne dsp series that you are interested in, get the 12. It will play to a lower hz then the 10 and when called upon the 12 will play louder and cleaner then its smaller brother. Alot of people will say that a sub is truely a sub at 15 inches and bigger, but I will say that a 12 is the smallest you should go. The 12 will move more air then the 10 and moving more air is what you need below 100hz. There are more expensive subs out there that have a 10 incher with huge amplifiers that could wipe the floor with the dsp 12 but for your situation Im comparing apples to apples. Im sure someone will chime in and tell you to get a Hsu sub with a 10 and tell you it will be all and everything you will ever need. If you are buying a dsp model, get the 12, and no it will not over power your other speakers unless you turn up the sub volume louder then it should be. get a spl meter and calibrate your sub beween 3-6 db louder then your other speakers depending on preference.

If you want deep, loud bass, size matters. Go with the giggest you can afford, even in smaller rooms.
