I have a smaller room I would geuss 25 deep ft x 20 wide or so. I do love the bass in yo' face. I come from and extensive car audio background this is my first real voyage into HT. I have been looking into the SVS which is highly recomended on every froum I have been to. I am just wondering if a double would be too much for my room even with my base addiction. Though let me get this straight bass is nothing in my opinion without the proper mids and highs to go along with it. So I'm an SQ fantaic but there must be heart stopping bass as well which so many systems lack, well at least do well IMHO.

I have a 12 Adire Brahma in my truck off 500 watts (only because at 1000 and 1500 my alternator hates me), even at 500 it gets insanely loud and LOW yet still crystal clear and extremely musical. Enough to vibrate the crap out of my outer door panels and everthing else including high amounts of blurry vision. Though this truck has VERY few if any rattles, thank god.

That said the single 12 off 500 watts will rattle your brain, no SPL #'s but I'm sure it is well above the 100 range. But this is in a small "room" with high cabin gain could I expect the same or about the same in my TV room with a single 12?

Sorry so long Ill go now:p

Thanks Dono

You will never get Car audio performance in a house. Ever. Cars are just too small, and houses are too big.

Your HT room isn't that small. Its actually on the large side. Mines only 16x12.

I think 2 SVS subs would be perfect in that room. If it was me, I'd grab 2 20-39PCi's.

One, Two or Three

The good news about buying subwoofers is that you do not have to buy them in pairs. Buy one and see if it works for you. If you need a little more, buy the second. A little more? Buy the third.

I pretty much figured that about car and house acoustics but I have never had a home sub so just hoping.

Just wondering why did you suggest the 20-39PCI's and not the PB 12-plus/2 or the PB-Ultra/2. What are your reasons for this? Not bashing just looking for more answer to my MANY ?'s An educated buyer is a happy customer after the wallet is emptied.:D

Cylinders have more output then boxes. They also take up less floor space, cause you were considering 2. You also never gave me a budget so I though I would start off in the cheaper area.

I read somewhere that someone was complaining about the rigidity of the SVS cylinders. He was thinking they should be beefier have you ever seen or heard one of these. I would think that physically the cylinder would not have to be as rigid as a box because of the shape and the effects of the pressure would be less in that realm as opposed to a sqaure box though. Am i thinking right on this.

The Cylinder weight about 80Lbs. Cylinders require no bracing due to their shape. They don't resonate like a box does, and the round sides insure rigity.

Besides, what would you be doing that could break it? They come packed from the factory in indestructable boxes.

I use two Hsu TN-1220's. Perhaps if they start making them again I'll buy two more! If some is good, then more is better, and too much is just right!:D

Im not saying physical damge I was talking pressure as in sound pressure i'm not worried about shipping.

Though I am a little afraid of cylindrical subs to be honest. I have heard several brands of car subs in tubes and they all sounded like crap no detail very boomy just plain crap. Of course they were not your high end subs but still.

You'll be fine. Its not the cylinder that determines those charateristics. The drivers in these are infinitely better then bazooka tubes.

My Hsus aren't boomy in the slightest. On the contrary, I have the tightest, cleanest, most potent bass I've heard in a home system (not that I've heard everyone's systems, mind you!:p ).

I've never heard an SVS sub, but I don't think you could go wrong. They get great reviews & word of mouth praise, plus they have a great return policy if you're unhappy.

gixxerific,

My familyroom is the same size, but opens up into a large kitchen, dining and
livingroom. A very open design for a sub to pressurize, that was why I went
for dual driver box. Wanted dual cylinders but couldn't get WAF. The ultra/2
more than fills the space with thundering bass.

Just got a PC20-39+ myself...great sub, tremendous detail and performance, but for your room and your stated taste you're gonna want 2 PC Ultras, 2 PB12 Ultras or 2 PB12+/2s. You can't go wrong with Hsu's either. I just don't think you're going to be satisfied with anything less than duals.

If you spend a bunch of money to get an out of balance/bass heavy HT its just stupid. Home audio is all about balance.

Isn't one of the reasons to use 2 subs to get a more even response in the low frequencies? Or is it really just to get more SPL? In my small room (11x14), one sub seems like more than enough but I was planning on using 2 subs to even out the bass, not by putting them in the same place but different places in the room. Is that thinking incorrect?

Not at all. But you have ot make sure to keep them in check, or the benifits quickly fade. You will not be driving each sub as hard because they have doulbe the output (assuming you buy identical subwoofers, which is HIGHLY recommened), and cook up less distortion due ot small cone movements.

There isn't less cone movement. They still have to move the same to produce a given frequency, they just don't have to work as hard to achieve the same SPL because you have two of them producing the same frequencies. I use one sub too. It ain't exactly small either :D

If you read my post you will see that I don't like only bass but a well balanced HIGH SQ experience. Don't worry with the amount of overall sound I plan to pump through the house dual subs might be needed.
