I bought the Panasonic TC-P42S1 last night and have it up and running in our bedroom...no pics because the room is still in the process. (fix walls & paint, flooring...)

I'll see how much i enjoy the S1 and make my decision for the family room after I decide if the S1 is "good enough". I need to buy a setup disc and fine tune the settings but so far it's pretty good. Out of the box it looked like someone poured dirty mop water over the screen...

What's disturbing is the quality differences in HDTV programming...still exploring Fios' HD selection though.:)

For the family room I'm in the 58" range. Don't know if I can go 65" (AH store has the 65" S1 for $2519....tempting...I don't know if it will fit without cramming the speakers right next to it so 58" might have to do. S1 vs. V10 will be the question. (I can get a 54" G10 for $1500 but I'm afraid of buyers remorse "should have gone bigger")

Oh well...like I said I just want to see if the S1's picture quality is good enough. We will see what 2010 brings...now to go research the 2010 Pannys.:D

Over an hour and no one has said anything?!

Congratulations!!! Welcome to the 2000's. You almost made it in time. :D

Doug, that's awesome, man. I'm happy that you took the plunge and get to check it out. I don't understand this, though:

You mean the picture quality, or the screen looked all dirty? If the screen is jacked up, exchange that bad boy. If it's the picture quality, that's strange to me - what picture mode are you using?

Congrats on the new BR Panel Doug, I have read other peeps experience with the dirty screen with the Panny, I guess the good thing is that it will clean right up but you should prolly call the dealer/cs and make a formal complaint about the condition upon delivery so the there is some record of this, just in case ya know...

LOL...I'm sorry, The screen came out of the box very clean. The settings made it look like dirty mop water...Just a very dull and gray.

It's set on vivid at the moment (day time with shades drawn) the only difference is I turned the contrast down to 80 from 100.

That's sounds strange to me. I also went from a CRT TV to my G10, and I thought that the colors were vibrant and true when I first turned it on and watched some broadcast TV. I had it set to the Standard picture mode. I have since used Avia to calibrate it, but the changes were pretty minor.

I find it odd also that every mode except standard the contrast is set to 100 from the factory.

Hey Doug, how's the S1 treating you?

A fellow just posted an excellent deal on the 65S1.

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=677853&postcount=91

I also posted this recently. It might help you figure out what size is best:

65 vs 60 vs 58 vs 50, side by side

65" is 17.4% larger than 60"

60" is 7% larger than 58".

58" is 34.6% larger than 50"

65" is a whopping 69% larger than 50".

What I then like to do is compare those exact % differences with the % differences in price. (To see if for every dollar spent, you get just as much display, proportionately). However, bear in mind that the largest sizes like 65", or even 60" for that matter, are sometimes considered as luxury items, and therefore have greater price hikes. Only sometimes though.

Hey Josten,

It's treating me fine. I need to buy a calibration disc... (shouldn't I own one by now?:))

Standard def looks like crud on it but I have Fios9 HD (HDMI direct to the display) so There is some nice looking HD channels. I've only watched one DVD (Cars) and there were some jaggy edges here and there. Could be the DVD-VCR combo that was doing that. We're going to get a BD player and maybe a very small surround setup, also. It does seam like the picture is sharper now then when I first hooked it up. What's that about? Is it real or is it me?

Hey it's in the bedroom...I watch it 30 minutes a day, so....For $649...I'm happy with it.:) Although, like my wife says, "You'd never know it!":D

Oh yeah, The most important thing is my wife is happy. She couldn't read tickers and such on a 20" from about 14'.:)

I've been struggling with what I want for the family room. Both size and version. I think I want the 58" V10 but the 65" S1....well you know. Paralysis by analysis. LOL!!!

S1 vs G10 42" to 46 ' for bedroom?

Between these two sets, which is the better display? I just chucked my 25 year old 20" Sony. I doesn't seem that there is anything else to look at. Thanks

I finally got off my butt and bought a TV for the family room!

and the winner is........ the Samsung PN58C550.:)

I just couldn't get myself to buy the Panny S2 and the next step up would be the VT25. (too expensive) Last years models are few and far between now and my wife (and I agree) didn't want to ship a big screen TV and have it be broken. So I went to Delaware for the tax free shopping. Looked a an S2 and a C550 side by side with the same HDTV feed and just liked the extra sharpness the Samsung provided. I also don't care for the double image the S1 & S2 give off axis. It gives print a drop shadow. I'm never off axis in this room but I might, in a year or two, step up to a 65" and retire this to the living room.:)
