    Onkyo TX-SR606 and other questions.

    It's not necessary unless there is some format the DVD is capable of playing but cannot transmit over one of the digital connections (e.g., multichannel PCM such as SACD or DVD-Audio over SPDIF connections). I use my receiver for all of my video switching. I don't notice any quality...

    Westinghouse monitors

    More off-topic: Add Akai (half owned by Grande Holdings Ltd) for televisions, Sansui (also owned by Grande Holdings Ltd) for Orion-made televisions (Orion manufactures quite a few lower-end products, including some of Toshiba's product line), and Nakamichi to the "salvaged" brand names list...

    Bioshock = HOLY %^*&!!!

    I don't have an exact count, but it fell in the twenty-something hours category. I received my copy release day (a Tuesday) and finished in on Friday of that week.

    Bioshock = HOLY %^*&!!!

    For its time, I'd have to agree; Deus Ex remains a favorite of mine. For what it's worth, I still found Bioshock immersive and fun to play (and it allowed me to flex my new hardware a bit :p).

    Bioshock = HOLY %^*&!!!

    I've already played the game to completion (one of the endings, that is). Excellent game. I didn't find the atmosphere to be as creepy as System Shock 2's (Irrational's earlier "Shock" game that they no longer own the rights to; also an excellent game if you can find a copy anymore). I didn't...

    Building a PC as a High Performance Digital Stereo Source

    Try Lian Li (my general favorite, perfect construction, high quality, and easy on the eyes), Silverstone (tons of HTPC selection), Zalman, Antec, or maybe one of these.

    LCD tv burn in

    An LCD that is functioning properly will not burn-in. Dead or stuck pixels are not uncommon, but their occurrence doesn't directly depend on the viewing material so the user could not generally be responsible. Dead or stuck rows or columns are more common with non-TFT LCD panels and they are a...

    Want to create an audio out port on my TV

    It is possible, but horribly hackish. Remember that the speaker lines would be speaker-level rather than line-level, so you couldn't directly attach them to an RCA jack or anything of that sort. Also, your TV's amplifier is likely on the weak side and I wouldn't count on it being able to power...

    Simultaneous playback on multiple computers

    Have you thought about setting up a internet radio (or rather, intranet radio) on one computer and then having the other computers use that as their playback source? If everything is already networked that would save the running of additional cables. If that sounds like something you could do...

    SACD to MP3 = laughter or plausible?

    The only thing I've seen that managed to get unencrypted DSD to a computer was with a modified universal player (I don't have the article anymore, I'll try a bit to find it again). Getting the data unencrypted is the difficult part; DSD is fairly easy to convert to PCM once you get it on the...

    JVC RX-DP9V, A Monstrous Receiver!

    There are plenty of honest, non-thieving pawnshops and brokers. If you get to know the people working there, you should be able to tell how scrupulous they are. The stereotypes popularly applied to pawnshops aren't really very accurate.

    Hello, 1st post, question on HK replacement.

    Good to hear. The AVR line is Harman Kardon's primary receiver series. The DPR line was their attempt at utilizing class D amplifiers. Class A, B, and A/B amplifiers had been around long enough to virtually perfect and class D is much newer. While class D was still evolving (it arguably...

    Hello, 1st post, question on HK replacement.

    Harman Kardon's DPR line was always noted as plagued by apparent quality control problems, as you've noticed first-hand. The AVR has been known to have its quirks as well, but less severe and universal. The DPR 2005's power rating is at twice (0.15%) the distortion of the AVR 635 (0.07%). I'm...

    Hello, 1st post, question on HK replacement.

    Despite the difference in MSRP, if I was choosing between the two units for myself, I would select the AVR 635. So, as far as "[my] thoughts" go, I would feel it was a sufficient trade if maybe not a perfect one.

    Have you heard of Edcom cd players

    Might you be referring to the Adcom GCD-700? If so, $700 is overpriced for a new, much less used, unit. Adcom discontinued all of its CD players a few years ago. Adcom tends to make decent equipment, but I honestly can't say I've ever heard anything incredible about its CD players.

    DVD rights

    Unfortunately, that's not what that case was ruling on. Kaleidescape licensed the rights to legally de-scramble DVD-Video content. The license holders claimed that the license that was agreed upon contained language that forbade Kaleidescape from ripping and playing back DVDs without the disc...

    6 ohm receiver -- 8 ohm speakers

    Recievers and amplifiers specify a guideline minimum nominal impedance. Whatever problems exist are the fault of the speakers (you may want to do some research online before calling them an "incredible deal").

    Harman Agrees to $7.8 Billion Buyout

    Crown (pro-audio) and Revel (higher end speakers) are two more Harman companies. I wonder how Harman et al will be changed by this? For various reasons, I have the opinion that Harman is a progressive name in the audio fields but that their brands are poorly marketed. For instance, the...
