I thought the name was a nice touch.

Jokes... Heard any good ones lately?

Speaking of cops ... check this one out: A blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little red sports car and was pulled over by a woman police officer who was also blonde. The blonde cop asked to see the blonde driver's license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Hey Pyrrho, I'm already working on this one: First, I was thinking I would remove the transducer from the SPL meter, attach a couple extension wires, and then glue it to my forehead. Next, I would sit down in the sweet spot and play the test disk while holding the meter comfortably in my...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Thanks a lot you guys, I think you hit the nail on the head. :) After reading your posts and paying particular attention to my position and movement during the measurement procedure, I have seen a major improvement in the repeatability and stability of the meter. I am quite amazed how...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Sorry I didn't mention this before. I did attach the meter to my camera tripod and place it on the couch. The meter is very close to where my head would normally be (when I’m sitting upright that is). I also played with the position of the microphone: first pointing it forward and then at...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Yes ... I understand, thanks. But why is it when I re-measure at my reference frequency (0.0dB @ 1000Hz = 80dB SPL when the range selector is at 80dB), the meter no longer reads 0.0dB? And why do I see variations while the tone is playing? Shouldn't the meter be "steady"? Maybe I'm...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

I’m really just checking the frequency response of the room more out of curiosity than anything else. I think it sounds not too bad the way it is … I guess I was just born to tweak. If need be I may treat the room in a passive way. The thing that is frustrating me right now though, is how...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Hi Buc, Yes, I have read most of that thread and did find it interesting. So basically you were not concerned about frequencies below the cross over, right? I started asking myself about the sub's level adjustment after reading this. The author makes no mention of it, so I'm thinking maybe...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

Thanks, mtrycrafts. This is what I thought I should do but did not think about the modes. However, I should be able to calculate the modes and choose a "safe" frequency, right? My intention is to use the meter and test disk to graph the acoustic properties of my room to see what frequencies...

    Another SPL Meter/Rives Question

I’ve armed myself with a Radio Shack analogue SPL meter and Rives Audio Test CD and am almost ready to do battle with my room. I just have one question regarding the plan of attack. When setting up the meter Rives instructs us to set the dB level to 80, play the 1kHz tone, and adjust output...

    A do it right B & M

I've heard lots of good things about the PS1200. I almost brought one home myself, but the physical size of the think scared me off. My guy had it on sale for just over $500. If I had known you wanted one I could have picked it up for you and shipped it out. ;)

    A do it right B & M

My little no name shop. There has been a lot of discussion lately about service (or lack there of) and big-box stores. On a recent trip to Vancouver Island I found myself in a Future Shop killing time while the wife and daughter shopped for (more) shoes. I was browsing through their CDs and...

    Looking for lossless downloads

I checked them out: They charge an annual $50 US membership fee, waived if you purchase $250 US worth of music or more per year. The price per song is $1.29 US. The service is not offered outside the US. They are applying heavy DRM to the music you buy. I think they are on the right track...

    Speaker wiring

With regards to your speaker wire, try to get your hands on some twisted 12 or 14 gauge (twisting offers better defense against EMI). If you can't find twisted, just some clear jacket zip cord in 12 or 14 gauge works fine. In either case, keep the wire away from AC and other cabling. You might...

    Digital coaxial

Just wondering what you mean by "regular" RCA cable. What does it look like and where would you normally use it if it wasn't connected to your DVD?

Is a 75ft speaker cable too long?

j, Are you trying to connect composite video plus left and right audio between the stereo and TV? If so, you should use 6 conductors: 2 each for video, right channel, and left channel. The centre RCA sockets at each end of each signal cable must be connected together (this wire is usually...

    Looking for lossless downloads

Seek and yee shall find ... Thanks for the correction, Brian ... and thanks to all who have posted. I have learned much in the last few days about digital audio coding. For example: MPEG4 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a proprietary audio format used by Apple's iTunes and is by definition...

    Help!(Vsx-56tx vs. avr-3805 vs.etc)

You have to love the 56TXi for its "plug-n-play" ability: Dual iLink, plus USB! This monster is my personal choice. :p You might want to check out this recent tread, I you haven't already. It seems Pioneer has begun watering down there receiver line with several new offerings that rival...

cut it 3 times and it's still too short

Care to elaborate on this one? I agree that soldering takes some skill, but when done correctly makes a superior joint. Any splice method that relies on holding one piece of wire against another is an inferior connection and will degrade over time.
