My Paper Shredder Fried my AVR's remote detector!

Thanks, we have an electrician coming over for something else, but I'll add this to the list. Any idea how to access the menus needed to do the firmware without the remote? The menu button on the remote is one of the ones that now does nothing, and I don't see any menu-looking buttons on the...

My Paper Shredder Fried my AVR's remote detector!

Last night my wife went on a marathon paper shredding session. The shredder and my system should be in two different breaker zones in my house, but for some reason, the shredder causes the system's breaker to trip, and not the shredder's. So that's the first weird thing. So she's shredding away...

The European Space Agency's Gigantic 154 dB subwoofer

Just saw this on CNN and though it might be of interest: A speaker so loud it could kill you - CNN.com Video Talk about headroom! I love the subheading: "Reaches levels so high, they could shake your brain loose."

Subwoofer auto-on doesn't work when source is cable...weird

I've noticed that my subwoofer's "auto" function is a little quirky. When set to auto, it turns on predictably when I play content from my BD player, AirPlay, or when I use the smart apps on my TV as the source. However, when the source is Cable, it doesn't turn on automatically the way it...

Listen to radio while watching TV without bypassing the receiver?

Thanks...I was scanning the manual for the keyword "passthrough" with no luck. Hard to find answers when you don't know the directly from which approach the problem in the first place!

Listen to radio while watching TV without bypassing the receiver?

I have a Pioneer VSX-823...lower mid-level I guess. I'm also a little confused on its passthrough capabilities. If it's on standby, and both the TV and cable box are on, it doesn't let he signal through to the TV. Not a huge deal...but I thought that what passthrough is.

Listen to radio while watching TV without bypassing the receiver?

Is it possible to listen to the radio or any other non-visual source while also watching TV through the receiver, ie without connecting the cable directly to the TV to bypass the receiver? My basic understanding is that this is not possible, but just want to confirm.

    Best sounding sattelites for music

I will go ahead and second this, and the recommendation of the Imagine Minis in general. It's a bit of a cliche to say you "thought you had a bigger speaker playing," but for real with these things. Buttery smooth, rich, totally convincing sound that should be coming from something quite a bit...

Pre-out Voltage and Power Amp Gain

Will the preouts on an AV receiver assume and work well with a power amp with a gain of 29dB (THX standard)? I know I can use the receiver's internal level control / Audyssey to correct if it's off my a few dB, but I don't want to it be totally off, and I certainly don't want the receiver...

    Tekton Lore Review with Measurements

^ I think because it's one of the few (only?) places where the Lore's frequency response measurements have been published, making it a unique review, even though it wasn't the winning speaker.

How close is the EMP E5Bi to the RBH SX61, technically?

Woops, should have noticed that :o But this does answer my question. I was wondering mostly about the types of materials each used in each speaker. It amazingly difficult to distill specs to a baseline. Various sites call the EMP woofer "metal cone," "aluminized," "aluminum"...probably a lot...

How close is the EMP E5Bi to the RBH SX61, technically?

I've often read that these are very similar speakers, and of the course the companies are closely related. The speakers appear nearly identical, and looking at the spec list of each, the differences are small: the RBH has a slightly larger cabinet, is 2db more sensitive, and extends to 55 rather...

Question about recording quality in older jazz recordings

Thanks for your thoughts, slippery and Irv. I agree that soloist-based music necessarily brings the soloist to the forefront, and I'm totally OK with that. I guess it is just a personal preference. Bring the soloist to the front, but don't bury the rhythm and bass. Really it's the bass that...

Question about recording quality in older jazz recordings

As a jazz fan, I've had this nagging question about the recording quality of older bop and combo performances for a long time. Why do older recordings - particularly bop and combo performances from the '40's-'60's - accentuate soloists at the expense of the drummer and bassist to such an...

Newbie trying to decide between Floorstanding speakers & build home theater from there

Not to hijack, but how does one find B Stock speakers? I've only ever seen a few Dana series b stocks for sale over at Audio Insider...do you just have to email and ask if there's any B Stock available, or are they usually posted as an online order option? Hopefully OP finds this useful as well.

Sensitive speakers that can do it all?

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but why would someone pump 1000 watts into a 101dB sensitive speaker in the first place? I know you want some volume headroom, but that's a lot of headroom, most of out of human tolerance levels (right??). There must be a reason if they built the speaker to take...

2.5 way speakers that are not towers or centers

What are the forum's thoughts on 2.5 way bookshelf/monitor speakers? For those who have a larger room and but who can't make towers work, is there much of an advantage over standard bookshelf designs? Or, would it be better not to worry about the number of midwoofers, and focus on highly...

Symptoms of good and bad crossovers?

I'm having a little trouble understanding the concept of "good" vs. "bad" crossovers. I understand they are important, and I basically understand the purpose (to split the frequencies/signal/power between the various drivers in the most effective manner for a smooth overall freq. response)...
