I'm curious to hear your results on this Gene. I have always hated they don't give you the option to do this on the mid-level units as well. They should definitely give you separate "Presence/Surround Back" preouts on a "Z" model though as well as giving you all the surround fields to take...

Being this unit is a "Z" series, where's the option to run surround back and presence channels simultaneously? For this reason alone, the Z7 does not belong in the "Z" category of receivers in my mind. Keep trying Yamaha!

This is because they have redesigned the DSA-1 amp and given it more power and processing, but have not speced it out yet. The price will remain the same. I think they are probably a month or two away from firm specs yet.

Try and remain patient on the subs. The dual sub system is definitely worth the wait. :)

I would suggest neither amp nor speakers, yet instead look into room treatment. Using acoustical panels to kill first order reflections can really clean up the soundstage. Without doing this first, you will never hear how any amp or speaker was intended to sound.

I used to get that error all the time with the 2500 due to having bipolar speakers for the suround/suround back speakers.

If the units has pre-outs/7.1 channel input couldn't he use the front channel preouts and connect them to the surround back inputs from the 7.1 input? I think he would still get sound from the front speaker terminals as well as from the surround back terminals. If so, he could power the woofers...

Justin, I would recommend the Emotiva MPS-1 configured with 5 channels (it is on backorder right now) or the Outlaw 7200 amp but you would have an additional two channels of amplification not being used with your current 5.1 setup. If used is more along your lines, check out Audiogon...
