How do I sound proof furnace intake vent?
I guess before I did anything, I'd check out the fan components. First, I'd replace the drive belt. A cheap first-step. A belt can look fine, but still be bad. Then check the fan/motor pulleys. If this is an old installation, they could be worn (thus damaging the belt) or the belt could be...

Receivers at pawn shops?
I've never bought one at a pawn shop, but have bought several on eBay with no problems. Just be patient and a deal will come along eventually. Jim

Just ordered a Roku
I also have been looking at these video streaming receivers, but my son claims that NONE of them really produces 5.1 DD sound. True or not? Jim

Good, Cheap AV Rack?
What sort of Rack? One that's hidden/out-of-sight or one that's visible to the room? Or perhaps one that integrates your equipment w/a TV mount? Lots of options. Jim

My New Sherwood Newcastle R-972
I have installed my unit and love what it does for my awful room. The soundstage is wide and smooth and the speakers truly seem to disappear. My surrounds are also much more involved in the system now. I can't imagine achieving these results manually. Jim

Looking for a new receiver! (Finally)
I just bought one of the Sherwood-Newcastle R-972s on A4L. The Trinnov sound calibration is really awesome. Especially for $600! SHERWOOD R-972 Newcastle 7.1 A/V Surround Receiver TrueHD DTS-HD | Accessories4less Jim

LG 55LW5700- no 5.1 surround output
The service menu hacks work! Was able to turn on the DD 5.1 from the TV's optical outputs and well as enable several other features. Jim

My New Sherwood Newcastle R-972
Found a deal too good to be true at Accessories For Less and had to buy it to replace my Marantz SR 7300. $1800 receiver for $599; free ship; 3 yr warranty (A stock); and the latest (bug-free, I hope) firmware. This is the unit that employs the Trinnov 3D sound calibration. What a tank! 42...

I think SN receivers are pretty good, especially for the $$$$. Yours lacks HDMI, but otherwise it's a nice unit. Go to the SherwoodUSA web site and see where the closest service center is. Or look for a replacement on eBay. Jim

Home Theater in a Barn (Well, sorta)
Thanks for the comments. Of course, the "muskets" are working models, built from kits many years ago. The flintlock represents one of our last connections with the stone age (flint and steel). I took a small six-point buck with it. The other is a .50 cal Hawken (Mountain Man type, like Redford...

Home Theater in a Barn (Well, sorta)
Lurked here for a long time; finally registered and accumulated enough posts to post pics. Over the past six months or so, I have been upgrading equipment/remodeling my listening room (not a formal home theater). It's in a basement room, about 12' X 14', and paneled in genuine (from a barn)...

120hz vs 240
I just bought an LG 55LW5600 and I love it. Matt screen and very highly rated. It's 120Hz, but same TV in 240 Hz if the LW6500 series. Not worth the price difference, however, as they won't be able to tell the difference. Jim

LG 55LW5700- no 5.1 surround output
Well, found a quasi-specific procedure over on on AVS Forums, in posts 30-34 in the LW6500 thread. Emailed LG; they deny it's possible to change to ACM 5.1 (liars).! Jim

LG 55LW5700- no 5.1 surround output
OK, gotcha. Frankly, I'm not that adventurous! Accessing the service menu doesn't look that tough, but until I get specific instructions how to change the Optical output specs, I'm gonna play it safe. Jim
