    updating 'vintage' system

Well, I agree with you that it is possible to find speakers that are 20 years old and high-fidelity by today's standards (30 years and I don't think that's the case). However, it is not an issue that a 6" speaker has to reproduce the sound of a 12". The driver diameter is by no means the sole...

    Powered Speakers

Well, I'm not everybody, and I don't like powered subs either. So I'm not being inconsistent :p I prefer to have all my amps in a rack, away from my speakers. Still, with todays high-efficiency amplifiers it's possible to do things right. But not very often have I seen powered speakers that...

Who here have cans alongside their systems?

The best you can do for that price would be a pair of MDR-7506 or MDR-V6 with some equalization to compensate for some peaks. If you want an absolutely flat FR with the cleanest waterfall plot I've ever seen, talk to WmAx about a modifed Beyerdynamic DT-880 2005 Edition. It's $329, and a few...

    Powered Speakers

I'd have to disagree about all speakers being powered. Stuffing an amplifier into a speaker cabinet imposes restrictions with regards to heat and noise that are simply not an issue with a self contained unit that can fit into a rack. Add to that the fact that electronics generally don't like...

    updating 'vintage' system

Don't fall into the trap of comparing guitar amplifiers with loudspeakers. A true high-fidelity loudspeaker is designed to reproduce the electrical signal going into it as precisely as possible in the form of mechanical vibration. Guitar amplifiers are built specifically to color the sound...

Quick test results, driver changes with heat

But your measurements only showed a 1.7% change in Qts...that doesn't seem very significant. You showed that driver characteristics change slightly when the temperature of the voice coil changes. This is not surprising or new, as the electrical properties would definitely change with changing...

    Green Glue on the floor?

You're partially correct. Green glue is designed to be used between two pieces of drywall or plywood to create a constrained layer. This makes the sandwich effective at deadening sound because it converts it to heat. If you (the OP) are concerned about sound leaking through the concrete...

    Medical Marijuana,Legal or not.

No, it is basically physically impossible to overdose on MJ. Unless you're injecting pure THC into your bloodstream at insane doses, you simply can't do it. I'm pretty sure that 1500 pounds in 15 minutes is an impossible amount to consume. Even today, with our super high THC content weed, the...

I would like to know what are the best loudspeakers for the price: 100$-150$

The Behringer B2030P is a great little monitor. Aside from a small air leak in the cab that can be easily fixed, they're superb passive monitors (for the price of course, the cabinets are still not anything to be desired) with surprisingly good off axis response. The best part? $130...

    Crossover help

It would, but for a small two-way setup it would not be very expensive and the added headroom is always good.

    Crossover help

You could always avoid this trouble by using an active digital crossover, giving you perfect integration and EQ options to precisely correct response and/or shape it to your preference. A Behringer DCX2496 would do nicely. That, and I'm too lazy to do the math. :p

Ascend vs AV123 in 300 dollar range

"Brightness" is merely a function of the individual tweeter and crossover design. The material used to manufacture the diaphragm is irrelevant. To stay on the topic, the CBM-170SE is a a great little speaker. It has very flat frequency response, is very neutral, and isn't of great cost...

    soundproof walls... need help! cork?

It's going to take a lot of heavy insulation to stop sub-bass frequencies. The most reasonable steps you can take are: -Isolate your subwoofer with a product like the Auralex Gramma Pad -Move your subwoofer as far away as possible from the complaining neighbor -Invest some money in room...

    Sealed Infinity Kappa Perfect VQ

Poly fill is basically useless at these frequencies. Use some higher density mineral wool or fiberglass (6-8lbs/cu foot) if you want an actual effect.

    Sealed Infinity Kappa Perfect VQ

You would lose 25%-30% of size from the elimination of the long port. The advantage to using a PR system is the elimination of the port construction. A long slot port is difficult to construct, but essentially adding more holes really isn't. The downside is the added cost of quality...

Enclosure material - What is truely best?

The lack of a more effective damping material with this style of construction is still a detriment. The added bracing with MDF will help push the main resonance higher in frequency, but it doesn't do too much with attenuating the vibration of the panels. This is the reason you see Chris...

    Headphone Recommendations?

I would get the Sony cans, as I have found most gaming-oriented sound products to be horrible sounding. I have found the MDR-7506 to be quite good for gaming purposes, as well as its original purpose, monitoring. Add in its rugged construction and I feel it is a winner (but I own a pair...

    Headphone Recommendations?

For reference, B&H sells an MDR-7506 with boom mic for $235.

    Headphone Recommendations?

Get the Sony MDR-V6 from Amazon. They are the same thing as the MDR-7506, just less expensive with red stickers instead of blue. They can be had on Amazon for about $75 shipped. In my opinion, they are the highest value headphone when your goal is high fidelity reproduction.
